Her childhood was harsh, as An-Mei's father was dead, her mother had left, and Popo was strict and terrifying. Since her mother abandoned her family, An-Mei was forbidden from mentioning her mother. However, this changed when Popo fell gravely ill and An-Mei's mother returned to her family. Upon her mother's return, An-Mei remembered the sole memory of her mother. In this memory, An-Mei's mother returned to see An-Mei. However, Popo chased An-Mei's mothers away. In the chaos, a bowl of soup fell on An-Mei, permanently scarring her. Eventually, the burn marks healed and An-Mei forgot the origins of her scar. Later on, An-Mei visited Popo one last time. During this nighttime visit, An-Mei witnessed her mother caring for Popo; she even cut off part of her flesh to use in a healing soup. Despite her bet efforts, Popo still succumbed to illness. Through this experience, An-Mei learned to admire her mother and honor mother/daughter relationships.
