Black Swan (2010), directed by Darren Aronofsky, is a psychological horror film that fits this idea perfectly. The main character, Nina, is haunted not by a ghost, but by her own mind and growing obsession with perfection. The horror comes from within, not outside.

Why These Interest Me

Both elements dive into the complexity of fear. It's not just monsters or ghosts that scare us—it’s isolation, guilt, mental instability, and the realization that sometimes we are the monsters. I find that deeply unsettling and powerful in storytelling.

Another element I found interesting is the presence of troubled or unstable characters. In many Gothic stories, the characters are haunted by their past, their guilt, or even their own minds. This makes the story more psychological and suspenseful, like in Shutter Island, where you are never sure what is real and what is imagined.

• Supernatural elements: Ghosts, haunted houses, and otherworldly powers always add an eerie atmosphere. I found this interesting because it creates fear but also fascination. For example, in The Conjuring, the presence of spirits makes the story scarier and more intense.

The two most elements that grab my attention are the psychological depth and the mysterious atmosphere.

Most gothic media have a captivating atmosphere that increases tension, makes the audience question themselves constantly, and have multiple mysteries on top of one another. This atmosphere doesn’t just create fear, but also curiosity, drawing the reader or viewer deeper into the story. Combined with the psychological depth, where characters’ minds are explored in unsettling and complex ways, gothic literature captivaites the readers attention making them completely immersed in the world. This combination of mystery and psychology is what keeps me fully engaged.

I also like ruins and decay because broken castles and old buildings make the story feel dark and full of secrets. They make me wonder what happened there before.
