The use of the sun as a symbol in the novel gives it a deeper meaning. For example when the sun shines on Hester even though Pearl believed the sun didn't shine on sinners like her mother (Hawthorne, pg. 180). The author allows the reader to believe that perhaps the sun shining on Hester was a sign of approval from God. "Yonder she is, standing in a streak of sunshine..." (Hawthorne, pg. 200) this is another example of the use of the sun but this time it's used to symbolize Pearls importance in Hester and Dimmesdale's life. She is the sunshine in their gloomy world. Another example of this is when the author compares Chillingworth to a "uprooted weed that lies wilting in the sun", (Hawthorne, pg. 254) the weed wilting in the sun is a representation of how Chillingworth's time and energy were gone after Dimmesdale's death because he wasted so much time focusing on revenge. Hawthorne also uses the sun to create a peaceful atmosphere throughtout the story. For example when he is describing Pearls growth and how intelligent pearl is but when he uses the word "sunshine" (Hawthorne, pg.85) it gives the description a sweeter tone. The sun is used in many ways throughout the novel.

Symbols and Their Meaning: The Sun

The sun represents different meanings based off of different cultures. Since different societies have different beliefs the symbolic value will be different. The Sun could represent a symbol of power. As the Sun sits at the center of the universe and the other planets revolve around it. The light from the sun shines against all the planets allowing them to blossom and grow meaning the sun provides life to the other planets. The sun acts as a source that controls the direction and purpose all things revolving around it making it a source of power. The sun sittting high in the sky acts more like a overseer. The sun looks over people and gives a notion of justice. Meaning it also can control human faith because it oversees all actions including ones that go towards the future. The rising of the sun could represent rebirth and growth. As the sun rises it represents internal birth and as it falls it represents internal death. Nightfall or lack of sun acts a way for the consequence to detach from the body and become spiritually recharged. As the sun starts to come out it represents the new growth of a person until they reach their highest peak.
