King Henry the VIII was the first to sponsored me. I was a map maker in his court and that is how he hired me.  I explored for England between 1508 and 1509.   The purpose of my trips was to seek a Northwest Passage through North America on behalf of England and then later I sailed for Spain to explore parts of south America and Africa.
