Fa referència a u nou model educatiu que es basa en una tecnologia eficaç, però amb un plantejament didàctic, és un procés social que facilita la interacció i col·laboració entre persones. Implica un canvi en l’organització i en la formació dels professors i tutors.

És una “modalitat d’ensenyament i aprenentatge que pot representar el tot o una part del model educatiu en què s’aplica, que explota els mitjans i els dispositius electrònics per a facilitar l’accés, l’evolució i la milloria de la qualitat de l’educació i la formació” Sangrà (2009).

Inclou plataformes sofisticades i eines més modestes, com vídeos digitalitzats, Power Point, etc. Les  plataformes d’e-learning inclouen la possibilitat de sincronia a través de la comunicació (vídeos amb pissarres i fòrums per exemple) que convinants amb materials asíncrons aconsegueixen models similars al blended-learning.

Els processos presencials es complementen amb plataformes LMS i ofereixen els materials segons el ritme de l’estudiant.
Permet un aprenentatge flexible i la possibilitat que els estudiants i els docents mantinguin una comunicació síncrona i asíncrona.

Poden adoptar diversos formats i estructures. Es poden catalogar en tres tipus ben diferenciats:

Continguts educatius (materials per a cursos, llibres de text, exàmens, material multimèdia, etc.).
Eines (software per a la creació, registre i organització de continguts educatius).
Recursos d'implementació (creació de llicències lliures, establiment de principis de disseny i adaptacions de continguts educatius perquè siguin gratuïts i oberts).
