Adding to the Conversation about how We Should Teach Children in Schools

The video highlights the fact that there is no such thing as a typical American family. Families come in all colors, shapes and sizes, each full of unique people who have love to give and want to be loved in return. I like the quote from the video that says, "Families love each other, and take care of each other - that's what a family is all about." We should help children to understand that family doesn't have to be biological - family are the people who are there for you.

Reflection on Cowhey and Hofmann Readings

I love how clear cut the issues are for 2nd graders! They see the problem and find a solution, without getting hung up on the things many adults get hung up on. They want to know who made rules they don't agree with, and how they can be changed.
These readings add to our conversation about defining family, because they allow for parents to be mom and dad, or mom and mom, or dad and dad. They also highlight the fact that a child can have one mom or dad at home, and another mom or dad who is a stepparent - as James said. "I've got two dads, one in my house and one in the jail. Lots of kids gots two dads." The Hofmann article is a helpful reminder that kids may not have a mom or dad because they've died, or are no longer a part of the child's life. As with the issue of providing books that cover the whole racial mix of a classroom, so all classroom libraries should allow for the widest possible definition of family. Again, the children need to see themselves and their families reflected in the books in the classroom. Hofmann makes some great points - that "Families are groupings of individuals who may or may not be living together, but are perceived by the child to be "family." ..... the school setting should be one that offers comfort and that validates all family structures."

My definition of a family ..... A family is a group of people who love, care, and are there for each other. Families don't have to have specific members, and don't have to be biologically related. They don't even have to live in the same house. They consider each other part of the family

The author portrays a family with a new baby who has Down Syndrome. Emma and her dad talked before the birth of all the things Emma would be able to do with her new baby brother or sister. As they go through each of these things again knowing that the baby has Down Syndrome, they conclude that, with a little extra patience and help when needed, there was nothing on the list that Emma and Isaac would not be able to do together after all. The bottom line is that it doesn't matter who is in your family - that family is there to love and nurture each other, whatever disabilities a child or parent may have. This would be a good book to have in my classroom library because it gives another perspective on the fact that there is no right or wrong combination or type of people when it comes to families. There is also a high probability that a child in the classroom will have a family member with special needs.
