"Chemicals can combine to form elements or minerals such as copper and nickel," said Linda Gulliver, a researcher at the University of Otago School of Medicine in Dunedin, New Zealand. In addition, chemicals are also found in cosmetics or food products.

Gulliver is a member of a research group of 174 scientists from 28 countries. The group is investigating how much these substances can cause cancer by examining 85 chemicals that are abundant in our environment.

Working in groups, scientists have studied how chemical mixtures lead to the development of cancer.

Gulliver said, “The $64 million question everybody wants to ask is; “Which chemicals should we watch out for?” But the answer to this question is still unclear,” he said.

The research results were published in the journal Carcinogenesis.
Gulliver also said that their research into whether chemicals cause cancer was carried out by individually checking each so-called "safe" substance. Studies show that some chemicals are not as harmless as claimed.

“We need to determine which chemical mix would be more harmful than the other,” Gulliver said. We do not have this information that we need to investigate at this time,” he said.

About one in five cancer cases is linked to exposure to chemicals, despite living a healthy life.
