What do you think? If teachers led the charge on school reform, what would the conversation on discipline sound like?

Students who deserve Special education deserve for it to be provided in a timely manner not until we prove the classroom failed them. And the others in the room, staff and students alike, deserve to learn in a safe environment free from continual disruption that is either unsafe and/or distracting from the learning. We also need to have curriculum that is developmentally appropriate AND does not stress out students (and teachers) so much that they have to act out. We need to advocate for smaller class sizes so teachers can give individual attention the student deserves.

There are so many needs that students have that schools are not providing. We need to be able to provide wrap-around services to our students and families. We do need restorative practices in our schools but this shift weighs on teachers. Admin wants the teacher to provide restorative conversations but there is no time to have these conversations in the classroom. Something has to give. We need time to have these conversations or someone to have the conversations with our students so that we can continue to teach. Sometimes it feels like student and staff safety does not seem like a priority here at Jeffco. What is a priority is to get the aggressive student back into the classroom as soon as possible, disregarding how this makes the other students and staff feel about their reentry. How fast can we get the aggressive student back into the classroom without taking into account that the staff or student might not be ready to deal with what just happened? Emotions are still heightened and yet, staff and students get pushed through the RP protocol as fast as possible. How effective is this when it is forced? Where in the protocol does it ask if the staff or students are ready to participate in the RP process? Where does it state the forced outcome of the forced RP process?

What can the union do to motivate members, the community, and lawmakers to do more?

I had discipline problems today. It's the same class every day with the same 5-6 kids causing trouble. I've emailed and called parents, administrators, and even security on occasion. I'm a veteran teacher who knows how to manage classes, but this group constantly reminds me why this is my last year. A small group of kids has no right to disrupt the others' education. I spend so much time on my troublemakers I don't spend enough time with the others.

It's frustrating to deal with this nonsense, and even more frustrating that our administration can't really deal with it either. Parents threatening legal action, reporting their issues to the superintendent, taking their issues to the media... Students and teachers lose.

I hate the endless cycle I get into with disciplinary situations. The same 6 kids doing the same thing over and over again. Eventually, none of my tools as a Dean work. It's not right that one kid can continually derail a classroom or even school.
