The lower income students lose knowledge over the summer since it is such a long break. Students with more income, can go and learn more over the summer, which increases their knowledge. The lower income kids learn more over the winter, while the more income kids learn more over the whole year. This relates to success because it shows that even though people with low income and in bad neighborhoods aren't as likely to succeed, people can come from anywhere and succeed. Since the KIPP kids came from a bad neighborhood, they were labeled as not likely to succeed. But everyone can learn at the same speed as others. It just matters what you are learning and when.

The achievement gap in the Marita's Bargain is the summer break Americans get. Studies in this chapter of the Outliers have shown that during the break, the lower class people aren't able to learn while the upper class can, resulting a learning gap between the two classes. This can relate to success because in order to have success you need opportunity which is what this chapter is showing. If you don't have the opportunity, you need to do extra in order to stay on the same page as others.

They also were making them want to come back to school as it said in the chapter kids which math was the worst subject was their favorite subject after KIPP.

KIPP students are different from public schools. All the students at KIPP are highly trained in math. They also don't have a lot of free time. Their school day is compared to the hours of a lawyer or a med student which is a lot for kids to take on. Public schools have a mixed variety of kids and their strengths and weaknesses. They do have similarities though. All schools have expectations they need to follow. KIPP may enforce them more, but there is still rules students have to follow. Both schools also want kids to improve so they get into a college to have a successful life.

Kipp students are trained to a very high level. for example it something like 81% of kipp students come out of kipp being at least one grade above in math. This is showing that they are teaching them better and more efficient than mist schools.

This relates to putting first things first because KIPP's main goal is to have the students succeed and that priority has been set since day one. They have achieved that goal numerous times as students from KIPP schools go on to wonderful colleges after because of KIPP's way of setting priorities straight. They would never be where they are today if KIPP didn't focus on giving them the opportunity to succeed and get out of their current situation.

The achievement gap in the Marita's Bargain is in summer break. Kids that have lower income don't have the opportunity or chances like the more privileged kids or the more rich kids. The lower income kids can't afford tutoring or even buying books to keep their learning up, so they lose most of the knowledge they have learned in the school year. While more privileged kids or the higher income kids get these opportunities to keep their learning up because they can afford it. For example, they can get a tutor or buy some books to read. This relates to success because success isn't just about talent or your work ethic, it is also about the opportunities and chances you have in life to be able to achieve you goals. The higher income kids have more opportunities and chances then lower income kids to boost their learning in the summer because they have more opportunities to do so.

KIPP students are very different from other public school students because they truly have to work at their success. For instance, Marita lives a normal life for a KIPP student, but to us, it is crazy to go to school at 7, wake up at 5:45, leave school by 5, and do 2-3 hours of homework. A similarity is that every school in the country is working to improve students daily, and that is also what KIPP students are doing, they are just gaining a better improvement rate by working through the problems a number of different ways. Another difference is that KIPP students have a shorter summer due to the fact that KIPP wants to not have as much of an achievement gap as usual. They don't want there to be an achievement gap during the summer. This lets them retain more information during the summer by giving them less time to forget it with the short summer. They also spend more time on each subject, and find the importance in requiring music and orchestra classes, as public school kids are not required to go to those classes.

Studies have shown that over long break the lower class of students are not able to continue learning and studying over the summer while the more privileged student can continue to learn and come back to school even smarter. This relates to success because your successful when you learn what you wanted to learn or you continue to grow is success. When the other students still get to learn they are sometimes more successful than the lower students because they don't have the same opportunity.

They realized that the system is not broken, and its not because they are living in a poor neighborhood, but its because they don't get enough education. So, KIPP Academy cut vacation days, and made school hours longer, to help students get a better learning experience. This relates "Putting First Things First," because of how KIPP Academy realized that the schools around America, do not categorize, learning as the most important thing in a persons life. So, KIPP Academy put learning as a main priority, and give enough homework to make students work harder, and get smarter.

There was a boy who got textbooks from his parents to continue to study over the summer. It was different for the girl.

I believe that an extended school year would help students more than having summer break because it would allow information to always stay fresh in our minds. In Marita's Bargain, Gladwell gave an example of how Asian students, who have year long school, scored significantly higher on a test that reviewed all they learned the previous year, than American 12th graders. This is proof that extended school years would help more students succeed. I also believe that Marita made the correct decision to enter KIPP. Gladwell also gave evidence of how approximately 80% of KIPP graduates get high school and college scholarships. So by Marita signing up for KIPP, it opening doors to many new opportunities. Opportunities that she wouldn't have gotten if she stayed in her other school.

KIPP students are different from other public schools because, at the KIPP Academy, classes are longer which makes the school days longer. This gives the teachers the opportunity to help the students understand the material better. It also gives kids in poverty or close to poverty an opportunity to be successful. Most of the kids at the KIPP academy are on the poorer side. The school has no entrance tests, the kids get chosen randomly from the list of kids that sign up.

The achievement gap in the Marita's Bargain is that lower privileged kids loses knowledge over the summer because their parents can't bring them to summer camps or can't read when they are bored. While kids who are more privileged can go to summer camps and read books if they are bored, which by the way increases their knowledge. So this can relate to success by showing how kids with more resources have a higher chance to succeed then the kids who are stuck in poverty type of neighborhoods to fail.

KIPP students are really different from student here or other public schools. These students are all close to poverty or are in poverty and mostly all qualify for free or discounted lunch. For one we don't need to not worrying about going to school while they had that problem before. Our school starts at 8 and goes till 3 that's only seven hours, and only have an hour or two of homework. Most student will wake up around 6:45 which isn't that early for us. But for KIPP student's they have a much longer day they can be at school for 12 hours. Then they go home to do more school which is more hours of homework. That isn't what were used to at all. After school were able to do sports or hang out with friends but at KIPP their whole day is school starting when they wake up at 5:45 and go to bed sometimes late as 11 pm like Marita. We sometime take for granted what we have while students at KIPP are working so everything they have and need that school to get places later in life.

The Achievement gap is something that separated the student that were poor from the wealthier more privileged students. It is basically the summer break after affect when kids come back to learn and have to adapt back to the school system again. But their is a twist the kids who are privileged and wealthy really have no problem and are able to read and over the summer because they have the support to do so. While as the less fortunate children cannot do all of these things so they are lagging behind and cannot get back into the learning process so they fall behind and are not able to excel to the point of the wealthier students.

KIPP students are different from other public schools for a couple reasons. First of all, they are highly educated in math and call it their favorite subject. This makes them excel in that subject, where as some students in public schools hate math and don't do as well as they could. Second, there are only less fortunate people going to KIPP. Also, if someone wants to go to KIPP, they couldn't because they have to be chosen through a lottery. Third of all, KIPP students have a different schedule than public school students. They have to attend school over the weekends and also go during some of summer. Also, their school hours are longer than public schools. This might seem bad, but it helps them in the long run, because they have enough time to do everything and don't have to worry about rushing through.

He gives evidence of Japanese school days being 246 schools days in a year, and American schools only having 180 school days in a year.

The achievement gap is the summer break that all the kids get after many months of having school. After some research and tests, studies have shown and proven that over summer, lower income students forget what they have learned in the previous year and aren't able to educate themselves in summer while privileged students are able to learn and come back to school with their brain refreshed and ready to gain more knowledge. This relates to success because the lower income students are falling behind and losing more time while the more privileged students are making all that time they have in summer more useful.

KIPP students are, indeed, different than the students that go to public schools. For one, public school students are not required to walk throughout hallways in a single-file line to each class. Another difference is the amount of time spent at school. A normal day at KIPP starts at 7:45, ends at 5, sothey have a 9 hour school day, compared to the 7 hour school day at public schools. The last significant difference is the homework load. Most public school have around 1 to 2 hours of homework per day, if not less. Marita, who is a student at KIPP has a whopping 4 hour homework load, which she stays up doing until almost 11 pm. These difference set a very thick line between the KIPP academy and most public schools.

I agree with Gladwell's assertion because if everyone was provided education year round, they would always be gaining knowledge. That would give them a greater chance to succeed. If they get such a big break during school, espiecally for the lower income students, they will not gain that extra knowledge and may begin to forget what they learned previously. I believe that decision to join KIPP was a good bargain for Marita. This is because she may have put a lot into the school but she gained a lot of education out of it. She is seizing this oppurtunity she is gaining and it has greatly helped her and increased her chances for success.

I agree with the fact that having an extended school year would make students more successful. (Not that I would necessarily like it.) This is because the students would have more time to work on studies, rather than other things. They would be able to jump ahead educationally. If they are ahead educationally, that involves more opportunities for the students. They have a number of possible career options, all of which they would be successful in. I think that Marita, made the right bargain. But that is for herself. Marita was a student that was willing to work hard to get smarter. Other students, that were more lazy than other, would not want to, and should not, sign up.
