The greenhouse effect describes how the warmth of the sun is being trapped in the lower atmosphere of the earth. The greenhouse gases contribute to the greenhouse effect. The greenhouse gases absorb the infrared radiation from the sun, and further on send radiation back to the planet's surface. The greenhouse gases are essential for life on earth, however they become a problem when humans emit excessive greenhouse gasses, like carbon dioxide, through using fossil fuels. With excessive greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, more of the sun's warmth will be trapped, which will lead to global warming.

As sunlight hits the earth's atmosphere, most of it absorbed by our planet's surface, while some of it is reflected back into space as low-frequency infrared light. Because of earth's natural amount of CO2 in it's atmosphere, som of the reflected light is trapped by said CO2 which prevents it from escaping into space and thus warms the planet further. Pro-climate change activists claim that since 1751, 337 billion metric tons of CO2 has been released into the atmosphere as part of fossil fuel burning. They argue that the atmospheric CO2-levels have risen from the preindustrial 280 ppm (parts per million) to 400 in 2013.

On the other hand, skeptics argue that the temperature fluctuation we see today is natural, since the earth's climate has always warmed and cooled. A study from 2003 by the Harvard-Smithsonian center for Astrophysics found that "many records reveal that the 20th century is probably not the warmest nor a uniquely extreme climatic period of the last millennium."

The rise of atmospheric levels of co2 must be man made because the rise in co2 levels occurred in a faster rate than natural climate change is able to produce. The atmospheric level of co2 did not surpass 300ppm in the last 650 000 years. This changed in the mid 1900's. The level of co2 has risen from 317ppm in 1958 to 400ppm in 2013. However, the earth's climate record can show that global warming has preceded a rise in co2. Former director of Greenpeace, Patric Moore said; " there is some correlation, but little evidence to support a direct casual relationship between co2 and global temperature through the millennia".

The global temperatures has been rising in a much faster rate than natural climate changes are able to cause. the natural climate changes are unable to cause such a big change in temperature on their own, thus human activity must contribute to these changes. According to William Happer, professor at Princeton university, additional co2 emissions will not affect the average global temperature. That is because there is already so much co2 in the atmosphere, and the co2 has blocked most of the infrared radiation possible.
