So, my group decided to write about the element of collaboration. We explained how it makes songs significantly better, from how it spawns creativity to how it forces us to listen to different perspectives in a single listening experience. We used examples such as: Ultralight Beam, Favorite Song, and Under Pressure to help define our element. Preview:
An interesting aspect to collaboration is how it brings together two different types of energy to the song in which it takes place. When listening to Favorite Song by Chance the Rapper Feat. Childish Gambino, we can really see two different energies being incorporated through collaboration. Childish Gambino typically has a very aggressive rapping style, a perfect example being Bonfire, whereas Chance the Rapper typically has a more laid-back style with a larger focus on articulating his infamously personal lyrics. Yet here, Chance takes on a much more aggressive tone while rapping, being in our face with his lyrics instead of allowing us to focus on what he says, he forces us to listen to what he says. What’s also interesting is that there’s a sort of role reversal happening in this song, given that when Childish Gambino’s verse comes along, he’s much more relaxed, knowing that the audience is already interested in what they’re hearing. These two different types of energy work perfectly to balance one another out, with one rapper being aggressively entertaining while the other sits back and relaxes.

"Ultimately, without the existence of collaboration, music cannot evolve and continue to grow into something greater," Group 18.

"It’s important to realize that there’s nothing wrong with an artist being better as a collaborator or a solo artist, and it also doesn’t mean that an artist who is successful at being both is any better," Group 18.
