The populist party was also known as the people's party. It consisted mainly of farmers unhappy about the democratic and republican parties. They believed that they needed to play more of a role in the American economy by regulating some businesses. A result of the populist party still today is an eight hour work day and single terms for the president and vice president.

There were plenty of changes from the industrial revolution which helped form America to what it is today. Since steel had become easier to get, urbanization started happening so big cities like Boston and New York City started showing up. Tractors helped produce food faster even though it ended up producing too much. Important inventions during the industrial revolution were electricity, motors, and the steam engine. The industrial revolution allowed the world to be more efficient.

Andrew Carnegie was an industrialist, businessman, and a philanthropist. He led the growth of the American steel industry and he had donated over 350 million to foundations, charities, and organizations. He wrote the "Gospel of Wealth" which basically told the rich to use their wealth to make society better. After selling Carnegie Steel, he passed John D. Rockefeller for the richest American for the next couple of years.

George Pullman was an industrialist and engineer. He invented the Pullman sleeping car and came up with the town, Pullman, Illinois. The Pullman sleeping car allowed for more comfortable travel. His town, Pullman, Illinois, was a company town and it featured shopping areas, housing, theaters, churches, parks, hotel and library for his factory employees all next to his plant.

A new vocab word I learned this unit is philanthropist. A philanthropist is someone who donates lots of money to charitable causes. They also care about other peoples needs instead of their own. Andrew Carnegie is a good example of a philanthropist because he donated 90% of his money before he died.

The thing I thought was most interesting was the populist party. I had never known that there was a third party to add to the republicans and democrats. It shows how many farmers there were back then compared to today. I don't think I could see enough farmers come together and form there own party today because of the amount of farmers.

One way my life today still connects with the industrial revolution is through steel. Since steel became easier to get during the industrial revolution it led to urbanization. If that hadn't of happened then we wouldn't have the cities and towns all over. The new school wouldn't have been built using steel.
