I decided to start this degree course in pediatric nursing driven by the drive to want to be prepared to stand by the side of children who, always according to a personal vision, face what is defined as illness. The aspiration is also to be a professional ready to relate to their families.
There really wasn't a precise moment that led me to choose this path and no one influenced my choice; simply as soon as I read the course of study and I inquired about the exams to study and about the job opportunities, I immediately registered for the test knowing inside of me that I was making the right choice despite all the difficulties that I knew I would then have to face.

Mrs. Daniela and her son Samuel go to the emergency room due to Samuel's severe stomach ache.
Arrived in front of the Triage, the nurse begins to investigate the child's symptoms so as to create an initial nursing diagnosis.

-Mrs. Daniela:
“Good morning, my 7 year old son Samuel has had a strong stomach ache for three days.”

-triage nurse:
“Good morning, I’m the nurse Noemi… did he vomit?”

-Mrs. Daniela:
“Yes, he did… but he doesn’t have a fever.”

-triage nurse:
“When was the last vomiting?”

-Mrs. Daniela:
“twice this morning. He hasn't vomited in a couple of hours.”

-triage nurse:
“Where does it hurt honey?”

-Samuel:
“Just here” he says touching his abdomen.

-triage nurse:
“okay, mom give me the child's documents so I register and give you the patient's identification bracelet that Samuel puts on his arm.”

The covid emergency was an unexpected situation for all of us and confronted us with the need to improve the health system of the whole world and in particular of the less industrialized countries of the planet: in fact, the latter did not have the necessary resources (vaccinations for example) and tools to eradicate the pandemic and limit the number of victims. we have certainly been put to the test and we are still paying the consequences of what happened, both from a physical point of view (because, after three years spent indoors and with masks on, our immune system is greatly weakened) and both from a psychological and social point of view.
During this period, the thing that most struck me is man's innate ability to cling to life and to adapt to a totally unexpected situation. Despite the thousands of difficulties and the numerous different thoughts about it, we have all tried to face this situation, but also to live with it in the best possible way. The vaccine was then the means that helped us get through this period the most.

During the Christmas holidays I saw a very particular TV series entitled "Everything asks for salvation". These are a few episodes set in a psychiatric clinic. It was interesting to observe how the few patients, protagonists of the series, despite being very different from each other and with different problems, have established a strong bond and have begun to see the world with the same eyes, exchanging advice and sharing joys and sorrows.

Describe how you felt about your first rotation in the hospital.

My first rotation in the hospital was very intense. I did it in the emergency room, so the first impact was different than what I could have had in a simple ward. I was able to be very little help because I still didn't have the necessary knowledge, but as the days went by I became more and more passionate about the frenetic and non-stop work of doctors and nurses: I have always seen them passionate about their work and always kind and available with patients and their families (as well as with us trainees, an aspect not to be underestimated!). My tutors have always been friendly and ready to clarify the thousand doubts that came to my mind.
I liked it a lot also because I was able to observe so many patients with very different pathologies. This helped me understand the world that awaits me and also confirmed my desire to work in this environment that is always ready to welcome and help others.

Being a good nurse means being a qualified healthcare worker from a theoretical point of view and very empathetic from a relational point of view; it is a profession that finds itself in continuous contact with people and their suffering - the right word (or explanation) at the right time can make the difference in a difficult moment.

The skills necessary for a nurse are manual dexterity, a good memory to remember the procedures by heart and communication skills.

Furthermore, it is essential to know how to work as a team and be open to change, which often introduces an improvement!

Personally, I hope to become a good, competent nurse because I am working hard both in studying the exam subjects well and during the internship; I really believe in the potential of this profession.

I chose the text "The Best Medicine?", which can be found on page 66 of the reading bank. This text struck me a lot because it talks about how laughter can speed up recovery time from illness. As can be seen in the text, laughter therapy began in the 1980s thanks to the writer Norman Cousins who described in one of his texts how he himself used comedy films to feel more relieved from a painful condition that afflicted.

Over time, this form of therapy has been widely shared by studies on the subject which have shown the actual effectiveness of this phenomenon has different levels; for example laughter helps blood flow by keeping blood vessels relaxed.

Today there are real sessions in which patients suffering from any form of painful pathology come together to forget that they are sick: joining in with the fun is doctor Tim Crick, and the 30-minute sessions that take place at Leeds City Hospital. According to Dr. Creek, in fact, "after a good laugh, our muscles relax, our mind stops focusing on pain or negative thoughts, and finally they begin to flow through our brain".

In the future I would really like to become a clinical tutor because I think it is a great opportunity to pass on my knowledge to a trainee who is training. This obviously implies that I will have to be very prepared both from a theoretical and practical point of view, otherwise it is counterproductive for both parties!

The moment of tutoring is very important and demanding, but it can become the perfect possibility for an exchange of knowledge that otherwise could not happen. And why not, the new recruits can bring a breath of freshness, lightness and lots of professional innovation!

I got along very well with one of my tutors in particular! She is a very pragmatic and welcoming person, she immediately made me feel "part of the group" and always integrated me into all the training activities of the profession. Among other important characteristics, typical of her personality, we can mention kindness, friendliness, empathy and firmness in saying things and implementing important decisions that require great personality. I have always admired her great professionalism and her attention towards carrying out all procedures. She is an impeccable nurse.
