Introduction to Evaluation

The purpose of evaluating this program is to draw comparisons between civilian-background educators and military-background educators, their successes inside the classroom and out, as well as review retention and job satisfaction which may be directly affected by their backgrounds. Gaps in the professional staff within educational system across the US may be adequately filled by veterans trained in the Troops to Teacher's program (TTP) but no evaluation yet exists to demonstrate how well TTP pipeline educators progress as compared to their civilian peers. This evaluation seeks to demonstrate that TTP educators are not only on par with their civilian counterparts but may also bring in unique professional development styles that increase their effectiveness in the classroom and directly affects their longevity in the education system.

Collection Methods

The data collection methods used for this evaluation process includes sampling quantitative data already in student records and a questionnaire to evaluate teacher self-reflection of the school year. Sampling the population of students who attend classes taught by teachers from different training backgrounds allows for baseline information to be established. The relative ages of all the students going into the classes, their socio-economic backgrounds, whether or not the students themselves have military family members, and their grades as compared in previous years’ classes of similar topics; these pieces of data will quickly establish a generalized student body against which deviations in grades or performance can be measures. External forces that are not affected or controlled by a teacher’s civilian or military status, like those listed above, have to be considered for ‘cancellation’ purposes if they skew the overall data.
To understand how an individual perceives their own worth, success, or capability on the job, a simple questionnaire that asks the educator to rank their performance based on pre-established criteria provided qualitative data that can be measured. It may show that veteran teachers are more satisfied with their own success while a civilian teacher craves more professional evolution through the system. Conversely, it may show a self-reflective sense of poor job satisfaction by military veterans than in civilian teachers. Observation of the teachers during the conduct of their classes will not reveal these data points and can only be attained through the self-directed evaluation process exemplified in questionnaires or surveys.

Expected Outcomes

The expected outcomes of this study will show a direct correlation between job satisfaction and retention based on military service. Job performance and student success will also reflect positively on educators with veteran status either on par with their civilian peers or exceeding their civilian peers because of their unique background and experience. The data collected will then be used to streamline the program, and expand the University or Higher Education System involvement, in order to reach a broader population of veterans seeking employment. This will address short-falls in the professional staffing of school districts as well as address joblessness amongst veterans whose experience may offer unique educator capability.
