A local vegetable store, walking distance from home had been having trouble being able to keep customers and ended up selling the business. Before selling the whole business, the owner decided to sell 51% of their business, effectively giving the new owners power over the business. The new owners decided that they needed to lower their prices in order to have more people coming through the door. They spent a lot of money on marketing their cheap prices, which drew a lot of people through the door. HOWEVER! in order to sell their product at such a great price, they had to buy cheaper stock, which meant this was not of good quality. In changing their stock quality in order to lower their prices, they drove new and existing customers away, which ultimately lead to the sale of the business.
The new owners (who also own a dairy) came in and re-structured the business, and it is now running effectively and bringing new customers through the door.

A local restaurant recently opened in a great location and had a nice atmosphere, although there had been mixed reviews about the food. They were popular for a short period as they were the only restaurant in this good location. About 6 months after they opened a new restaurant was opened directly opposite. This new restaurant offered great food and was consistent with the quality, this caused the majority of customers to favor the new restaurant. The original restaurant shut down as it was unable to compete with the new restaurant.

We had a butcher open up not too far from where we stay, it was family owned. They focussed on South African products as well which brought in the African market. The business was going good until they decided to open a second shop. The place they decided to open the second shop was hidden and didn’t really have many South Africans in the area to offer support. After a few months of being open and not making any sales they decided to close the second shop. Eventually, after spending money on rent for both shops they found themselves drowning in debt and were forced to close their first shop too.

Video Ezy use to hire out VHS as technology changed they then hired out DVDS. however the movie market grew, and people wanted access to movies or programmes more quickly. Netflix arrived and online streaming which meant that Video Ezy closed down. If they had thought of possibly a cheaper rate or a online store than they may have stayed current.
