Technology's Influence on Societal Life

Throughout Fahrenheit 451 there are many point of influence through the use of government funded programs. These programs and technologies are found in places such as, the TV Room and the influence of a calm life. This would result in the creation of shows that involved the watcher as a part of the story, “They write the script with one part missing. It's a new idea.” (Bradbury 17) This was often used as a distraction and a belief that the life that mildred is living a normal life to full content. These programs that are played in the parlour, are those of middle class family comedies that are similar to but accommodated to the meet the expectation of the future’s middle class. With this new technology and the ability for the viewer to interact causes a imprint in the mind of the common person. During these times there is also the use of the seashell radio inside of mildred’s ear. This would constantly give a flow of advertisement and monitored radio broadcasts. Mildred has had the earpieces in for so long she has developed a skill for them “She was an expert at lip-reading from ten years of apprenticeship at Seashell ear-thimbles.” (Bradbury 16) She would refuse to take out the piece and therefore developed a lip reading skill. This was perfectly normal in the society at the time as these ear pieces were advertised products forwarding the push of technology. The government advertised these products as household items and the population soon began to allow themselves to be controlled. In an ever evolving future the government pushes their expectations through forms of new technology

Social media's impact on life

For the current state of life on earth there is a constant flow of technology and social networks being pushed onto the common population. During this generation we have seen a major increase in the ability of technology and social platforms. Its has become a societal norm for today’s generation to check on these social platforms and to do it regularly, as “22% of teenagers” log on to their prefered social media platforms more than “10 times a day” (O'Keeffe). For the aspect and effect this would have on teenager, this shows that social media has become a part of this generation’s lives and for most has become a habit. Also portable technology has become a household item as “75% of teenagers” have a cell phone accessible at anytime, for the majority of the population technology has aided in the advancement of society and the advancement of society’s expectation of a normal life. (O'Keeffe) Social Media is also a large resource for our news and political opinions. As seen before there is a majority of americans getting their new sources from social media as in “62 percent of all american adults”. (Gottfried) This will show that the a percentage of Americans rely on social platforms for a form of news. This will also show that most of the population will believe in these stories even if they are not truthful. Another huge aspect on the study of behavior and actions taken on these platforms is the use of it for charitable events. A study had found that people would avoid giving time and money to a charitable cause by liking it or sharing said event on social media platforms. (Gaitho) This shows a negative light on the part of the user as he or she was acting in more of a lazy sense and having a feeling of action either way. Social media has and still will be a major stand inside the world of the future generations to come. These platforms will stay up and intact for years to come, and how we use it will come to serve whether it has a purpose or not.

Government Issued for control

Inside of Fahrenheit 451 there are major organizations created by the government that are in place for control of social ideas and normalities. During the story there is a constant pressure of programs causing for censorship and removal of expression. Books were used to symbolize censorship such as when Captain Beatty stated "Once, books appealed to a few people, here, there, everywhere. They could afford to be different.” Groups such as the firefighters create the illusion that expression of thoughts and ideas are evil, this is reinforced by the fact that books are illegal and are burned when found. Firefighters in Fahrenheit 451 are seen as an imposing figure with much of the population afraid of their work. As the story moves along, we get to the point of the chase of montag. Montag is being chased by the firemen hound and police, he is being chased for the storage of a number of books. This furthers the control with fear aspect that the government is pushing forward. Along with the fireman there was also the mechanical hound that soon began to become a part of the story. The mechanical hound foreshadowed the events later on in the story as being introduced as an opponent of montag when the two first met. This is best shown with this excerpt from the story “He saw the silver needle extended upon the air an inch, pull back, extend, pull back. The growl simmered in the beast and it looked at him. Montag backed up. The Hound took a step from its kennel.” They are introduced to each other in a subtle yet alarming way. It is seen that the hound senses something about montag and montag makes his quick escape. Either way the government throughout the story is looking to find way to limit expression and create similarity

During the media powered age we live in today, there has been controversy and speculations about what we can and can’t trust on the internet. For the majority of the past 20 years the political aspect of media has been huge, whether it is tv shows, news, or social media. This isn't just local either, studies have shown that “31 out of 55 countries used state funding to manipulate media”. (Center) This shows that governments across the globe have been controlling media and using it to their advantage. Furthermore the current reach of media outlets is at the highest it's ever been. With more ability to gain and reach out to populations with messages countries would be soon to take advantage. Using social media is a much easier way that is both cost efficient and able to reach large groups. Governments would often spend hundreds of millions of dollars but social media’s dramatically cut that. (Tony) Finally these programs also allow for a majority reach for governments across the world. Government make their posts and it allows for a much wider reader span which is necessary when getting a point across. This is show from a statement from the Homeland Department of Security stressed the importance of social media platforms for emergency communications. In conclusion the government's ability to access a platform of a large amount of people fast is needed for a well thought out political plan
