St Augustine, FL --> First European city and port in the new world.

Sir Francis Drake attacked and burned the city in 1565. A few years later, it was ransacked by pirates and many of its inhabitants were killed.

The Lost Colony

The colony became lost when its leaders returned to England leaving 90 men, 17 women, and 9 children. When the leaders returned they found only a carving in a tree that said "Croatoan" and no other sign of the group. The mystery of the lost colony has never been solved.
