Hello to everybody, I am a teacher of maths and science in second grade school in Italy (age 11 to 14). Scientific disciplines in Italy haven't been considered as important as humanistic onesand Italian language and literature, Latin (and even ancient Greek) still occupy more hours in second grade school curricula. So young people generally don't undertake Stem carreers, unless those who are extremely good at them and whose families push hard on them!

I have been a STEM teacher in my school for about 5 years now, and during this time it has become very clear to see the change the pupils have in their approach to how they learn and how they answer questions/solve problems as a result of such approach. Students need to become involved, their curiosity needs to be picked, they need to understand why they are learning something and what they can do with it. When I was a student,Science and Maths were taught in a boring and mechanical way and I didn't like them. As a teacher I see that the interest of students in STEM subjects is decreasing every year. As a consequence, this fact implies that the level of these subjects is decreasing as well, so the students that keep studying STEM subjects may learn less than what is expected.
In the end, you do not only lose people in STEM professional careers, but some of those that remain in those careers are getting less prepared to faces the challenges of our current society.

STEM careers are risky because they require specialization and it's impossible to predict which specialization will be required in the future. The salaries are not enough to compensate. They aren't even close to a fair compensation for the risk.

I'm a teacher of maths and science in a lower secondary school, in Italy. I think STEM are the only way to discover how the Earth and natural Systems work. Everyday I try to explain how much "Science" could be hidden inside any object or food or electronic device. I think teachers have to show students the connection between STEM and daily life. Students don't have to take it for granted that things surrounding them are working well: what "works" today would not "works" properly tomorrow if somebody did not take care of the theory behind them. In addition, new brains are fundamental to go on and create innovation.

In my opinion, pupils always think that Sciences are more difficult than other subjects, but it´s our mission as teachers to guide them into this incredible world. It's so hard to teach a practice subject without facetoface contact. We have to manage with simulators and software related with different topics. We keep in touch through virtual learning environment. In this site we have resources, tasks, contents and differents ways to be in touch: forum, chat, quickmail.

Globalization is a great advantage, because we can all know the progress made in other countries, continents, ... but it is also a problem that affects certain countries at a disadvantage (lost population, low birth rate ...). In my opinion in Europe there are all kinds of professionals with many STEM skills. Education in Europe and around the world is undergoing profound changes and teachers spend a lot of time and effort to improve every day and that acquiring those skills is no longer a problem.

The biggest problem is, on the one hand, that companies demand highly qualified experienced staff with languages and, on the other hand, that workers do not always have experience, even if they have completed their work practices in higher education.
In addition, as I said before, we are dealing with the issue of globalization, with a job market in which we find people from all over the world, with different characteristics, trying to get a job.

I'm a computer science teacher and I'm a founder of a CoderDojo coding club in Nafpaktos, Greece (http://coderdojo.ekppanou.gr). I run STEM labs since 2008 using Lego Mindstorms robots and since 2015 I introduced in my workshops ARDUINO boards and the Raspberry Pi computer. My feeling is that In Barcelona there are not many people, except for who are working in he field, that know what STEM means exactly. On my opinion the cool term doesn't really matters, is how to drive society towards the scientifical knowledge what concerns me. The abuse of trendy acronyms is collapsing the educational scenery confusing teachers and students and families. We should make the science more accessible, even the language we use is exclusive and classy in a certain way. Sometimes the science's terms sound frightening and innacessible for young people and for their families, decisive during the education journey of their children. We need to bring science to the people, to the street, make it natural, out of stereotypes. And regarding the critical way of thinking, it is a step that teachers and parents should do in first place. To really appreciate the creativity of young people, are we, the adults, ready to accept the confrontation of opinions that follows creativity, innovation and critical thinking? The lack that exist actually in Spain is due to the stereotypes that still remain in the collective imaginary, and due to the difficult accessibility of the students to the science's bachelors. The actual minimal access grades to them makes the entry inaccessible for, may be not brilliant students, but for skilled ones, loosing the talent of many young people.

I work in an independent secondary school and find that our pupils have a blinkered view towards STEM careers. They often want to persue careers in medicine or veterinary science and dismiss or have little knowledge of STEM careers outside of medicine and veterinary science. I have been trying for some time to expand the students knowledge base of science careers to include anything from arborial science to biomedical engineering. It is essential that we give students the opportunity to explore lesser known but vital STEM careers to enable progression of society as a whole. We need to get across to students and the general population alike the integration that exists within STEM subjects and careers such that they are not mutually exclusive.

So what is left? More than ever (but is it true?) today  you need to be informed and keep up with the times. In this project I aimed to integrate math, information skills and art and design products. I get very good results. I think the Future Skills gap is a huge issue across Europe. Although our countries have different Education systems, there is a lot we have to learn from each other.
We have to inform our students of the contemporary careers available to them and of the skills gap and the consequences to our economical growth, in away they understand. It is important for them to know, while we have such high unemployment in some areas that there are many routes into STEM Careers. I teach physics in a secondary school. I've just started to teach STEM via some project activities, and recognized that STEM help students to get involved in learning, teach them real life situations, and develop critical thinking. As a teacher I need more skills and knowledge to teach STEM properly. Nowadays physics couldn't be a separate subject. Due to Ukrainian curricula math, physics, chemistry, biology and IT are taught apart, and engineering isn't a part of curricula at all. So our educational system should be updated.
