Henry at first thought he was hero and was praised by his community for just enlisting to go to war, but then he faces reality and isn't even sure if he'll stay and fight. His first battle comes and he does overcome his fear. although he doesn't run he forgets if his gun is loaded or not because he is so scared/nervous. The second battle starts and he sees other soldiers running and this time he ran. Angered by the generals decision to stay and fight he wonders into the woods to think and justifies him fleeing by believing its natural for all things to run from danger like the squirrel. Henry is dynamic because hes constantly changing; he goes from a coward to a soldier in a short period of time.

In the beginning henry believed that he was a "hero" and that the whole town had praised him for enlisting to go to war. Then when he's facing reality hes not sure what he wants to do either stay or fight. In his first battle henry overcomes his fear, but in that moment henry had forgotten if he had loaded his because of his nervousness. The second battle comes in and henry gets afraid and starts running to safety. Henry had said that " death must make a first choice of the men who were nearest." he had began to feel pity towards himself, that he felt he was ill used."then he began to run in the direction of the battle."

this quote from chapter eight is one of the examples of Henry's changes as the story progresses Henry again tends to change his concepts or his views on the battle and everything around him.
