In the book Fahrenheit 451 some of the characters suffer from anxiety that leads into depression. The characters don't just come out and say they are depressed we pick that up by their actions. “...He felt the temperature rise at this one spot where a person’s standing might rise the immediate atmosphere ten degrees for an instant.” (Bradbury 3) This quote shows how Montag is feeling anxious and every time he would turn that corner he could feel the warmth. What I got from that was maybe he was used to walk with someone and they in some way left and now he is anxious of being out alone. It could be linked to depression if someone died that Montag walked with and now he smells that girls perfume or their warmth as if they were still there. Montag said “I wouldn't want to be its next victim.” (Bradbury 25) This quote shows that the first victim or victims it must have hurt Montag. He could be depressed about the first few victims. Now he is worried that he could be the next one to get hurt or be the victim too. You could tell by the tone of his voice that he was worried, upset, overthinking, and etc. He could have anxiety that leads to depression, which is causing him to think he might be the next victim.

In Fahrenheit 451 you can see that Mildred has been through a lot. You can tell by the way she acts and how she says things. When Montag said this to Mildred you could see something was wrong. Montag said “Maybe you took two pills and forgot and took two more, and forgot again and took two more, and were dopey so you kept going until you had 30 or 40 of them in you.” (Bradbury 17) You could tell there was something wrong with Mildred here because one she was taking medicine and two she took to much the first time she just kept going. She had so many in her system that she started to forget everything and her problems and her being hurt just went away for while because she was dopey. The name Mildred means gentle and strength. In this story I feel like the word gentle would fit her more. Mildred also said “I’m sorry. I really thought you were having fun at my expense. I’m a fool.” (Bradbury 26) You could tell that someone has hurt her because she’s scared of the out come and scared she’s hurting people. She seems vulnerable, like someone has pushed her around and now all she does is gets pushed around and is hurt from it. She says sorry even if she didn’t do anything wrong.

In Fahrenheit 451 you can tell a lot of the characters are dealing or going through anxiety that leads to depression. Some of them go through it more and a little harsher than others. One quote says “She’s dead. Let’s talk about someone alive, for goodness sake.” (Bradbury 68) You could tell it hurt them bad. They didn’t wanna admit she was dead. They are hurt and don’t wanna show their feelings to anyone. So she probably held it in, instead of talking about it. Also “She saw everything. She didn’t do anything to anyone. She just let them alone.” (Bradbury 108) You could tell she was hurt and didn’t wanna talk to anyone. She just suck to herself, she was worried and sad. She wanted to be left alone as she left others alone. She had hit a rough spot and didn’t know how to cope with it besides making herself distance from others. Clarisse means gentle, bright, shining. In this book it seems as if she is a gentle person. She is easy to get to, and is a very sad person because of her past.

According to this research, “Depression occurs more often in women than men.” (“Depression.” Anxiety) Everyone’s manners are different and differ based on their sex and age. Men usually show their actions by anger, tiredness, drug and alcohol abuse. Women guilt, sadness, and worthlessness. Teens would be getting in trouble at school or acting out as younger kids is refusal to go to school. Another article says, “Roughly 50% of people are diagnosed with depression with also being diagnosed with an anxiety disorder.” (“Anxiety”) Anxiety leads to depression a lot of the time. Most people with depression was affected by anxiety first. Lots of people are diagnosed with “anxious distress,” which is when they feel tense, restless, and have trouble concentrating because they worry must if the time. Another article says, “It is estimated that up to 15% of the adult population will experience depression at some point in their lifetime.” (Depression Hotline) Most likely almost everyone will end up dealing with depression at some point in their lives. A lot of people will tell you it’s not a fun thing to deal with, it’s actually hard to deal with. People will act totally different and have different actions than usual.

According to the research, “In a 2006 study of patients diagnosed with depression, those who were taking prescription antidepressants had been taking them for an average of 5.5 years, and those in psychotherapy had been in therapy for 5.8 years.” (Bjornlund 62) It’s takes .3 more of a year to go through psychotherapy then taking medication. Which psychotherapy is better for you than medication because you can become addicted to medication. Another research said, “They may help improve the way your brain uses certain chemicals that control mood or stress. You may have to try several different antidepressant medicine before finding the one that improves your symptoms and has manageable side effects.” (“Depression”) It shows that not all medications will work effectively as others. You may need a higher dose then others or even a lower dose. Not everyone’s body reacts the same. Also to the same research, “Antidepressants take time - usually 2 to 4 weeks - to work, and often symptoms such as sleep, appetite, and concentration problems improve before mood lifts. So it is important to give medication a chance before reaching a conclusion about its effectiveness.” (“Depression”) If you don’t go the full 2 to 4 weeks to see if it helps you won’t know if they will. Probably end up with a higher dose and that won’t work for you because it’s to high. They can help you feel better in a way but also not help you in the way it should.

According to research this girl explained her time during depression, “the first time Faith-Ann Bishop cut herself, she was in either grade. It was 2 in the morning, and as her parents slept, she sat on the edge of the tub at home..” (What’s) It had explained how she cut under the soft skin near her ribs. She had said, “It makes the world very quiet for a few seconds.” “For a while I didn’t want to stop, because it was my only coping mechanism. I hadn’t learned any other way.” (What’s) Depression can lead self harm, drug and alcohol abuse, and etc. Depression is a horrible thing that many people go through. It’s a long rough situation you deal with from the time you wake up to the time you go to sleep, if you sleep. Another research says, “Over time emotional eating can lead to weight gain and feelings of guilt and shame, plus it does nothing to treat the underlying cause.” (9 Surprising) Some people eat when they are said and others starve themselves as a result of “eating their feelings away” or “self-esteem” boost of losing weight. Depression can make you do very messed up things that you’ll probably regret.
