I really enjoyed this visit to the São Cristóvão fair, as I met a welcoming people who represented the Northeast well with their typical dances! Not to mention that we had the pleasure of eating the famous mixed barbecue from the Northeast and trying Baião de Dois and banana patiguar, a delicious experience, everything perfect!

A curious fact about the São Cristóvão Fair, officially called the Luiz Gonzaga Center of Northeastern Traditions, is that it started in a completely improvised way: Northeastern truck drivers arriving in Rio de Janeiro would stop in the area to rest and ended up forming forró music circles, selling typical products, and cooking food from their homeland. The gathering became so popular that, in 2003, it was officially turned into the cultural space we know today bringing together music, cuisine, crafts, and traditions from Brazil’s Northeast, all in one place.

The São Cristóvão Fair introduces us to a little bit of the Northeast! It offers typical foods, drinks, some exotic clothes and utensils that are not very common in our region.

There is a fascinating little museum that shows us a little bit about the dances, houses, musical

instruments and some words that we don't use here in the Southeast.

I fell in love with the place and I will be back.

The bars and restaurants of Feira de São Cristóvão offer the best of the northeast of Brazil: food. Beer, tapioca and carne de sol with manioc dominate the tables, served by waiters with a very characteristic accent of the region. At Jerimum do Nordeste, one of the restaurants at the fair, the palate is whetted with shrimp, crab, siri or sururu soups, shrimp in moranga (a kind of pumpkin), baião de dois, farofa and manteiga de garrafa, between others delicacies.

Last year, in the summer, I went with a group of friends to the São Cristovao Fair. It was exciting to know a different and cultural place in Rio. We spent the night there, drinking, singing and dancing (Forró, most of the time). The karaoke bar’s were amazing!!! That night we tried a lot of different foods and caipirinha (rs). It was an unforgettable night but I really want to come back in the day to enjoy more of the food.

I can say that it’s a magical place, where you can meet people from everywhere and enjoy a lot of new culture.

Music from the Northeast of Brazil is full of rhythm, culture, and feeling. Some famous styles are forró, baião, and axé. These styles have strong beats and tell emotional stories. Many Brazilian musicians are inspired by this music.

Caetano Veloso is from Bahia, a state in the Northeast. He mixes old Northeastern music with modern styles like rock and MPB (Popular Brazilian Music). Gal Costa is also from Bahia. She has a strong voice and helped make Northeastern music popular during the Tropicália movement. Jorge Ben was born in Rio de Janeiro, but he added Northeastern and Afro-Brazilian sounds to samba and funk, creating a special style.

These three artists helped show Northeastern music to Brazil and the world.
