The resources showed me that as counselors we need to be aware of our stressors, physical well-being, diet, sleep schedule, interpersonal relationships, and many other things. At first, all of these components felt overwhelming, but upon reflection, it felt calming knowing that I have to the power to control almost everything related to counselor burn-out.

Self-Care is delicate and the most important part of counseling. Without self-care, we cannot truly be there for our clients. I have been reminding myself to be selfish so I can be selfless.

Meditating for at least 10 minutes is one way I plan to self-care. It allows me to take time for myself and focus on my body. I can analyze my breathing and sources of physical stress. Journaling is also an excellent resource for me to remain in the present. I recently purchased a pocket-sized journal. I want to use the journal to write down the "protections" I have put in place for my job.

I started doing rocking 3 months ago and I have found many parallels between this activity and self-care in counseling. Rock climbing is dangerous, but I have clips and ropes to protect me. I also have training to prepare me for the climb. Counseling, like climbing, involves risks. Good self-care mitigates the risks and allows us to reach our true potential.
