Francesco Goya (1746-1828) was a Spanish painter printmaker and an artist of the Romanticist period. In his "Los Caprichos" collection, the most known etching is "El Sueño de la razón" (The Sleep of Reason). Los Caprichos depicts (very accurately) Goyas' critical point of view for the society he lived in. The print shows a man slowly falling asleep and as he does this, monsters from the dark (the bats in the backround) fly in his direction. There are also owls in the picture, one of them is holding a paintbrush as if to motivate him to wake up and continue working. On the lower left part of the print it says "The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters"; The monsters are depicted as the bats; The owls represent reason; and the sleeping artist represents the waiver, to give up on everything, in this case, to cease to use ones rational thought. It could be criticism to the ignorance that plagued the mass majority of the society he lived in. Ignorance that feeds the corrupt and the insane; that produces monsters.

This painting make me feel happy because it was painted in a happier moment in Van Gogh's life. It was before he go to a mental asylum. "Self-portrait with necklace of thorns and hummingbird", as said before, is a self-portrait, the work of Frida Kahlo. Founded in 1940, between Naive Art, also known as Early Modern Art. Currently, the work can be found in the Art Gallery Albright-Knox in New York. The thick eyebrows on display, as well as the subtle fluff indicate the intention to show in its essence; unretouched. Inmates hair highlighting face going in the same direction. The nature also appears to have an important role in Frida. This can be seen by the green in the background and the dragonflies and butterflies on her head. On the other hand, around your neck is a necklace of thorns with blood on display, and a hummingbird hanging dead and can symbolize pain and disappointment. On his shoulders still we see a cat and a monkey, both black, one on each shoulder, which seems to indicate a supposed bad luck or bad omen, probably due to his misadventures in love life. Finally, it should be noted that Frida is dressed in white. White: symbol of peace; purity ... Looking at painting we feel inspired.

The paiting has a large basket filled with beautiful and bright pink and purple flowers inside of it. The basket is much larger than the peasant. There's a woman loading the basket onto his back, who is actually much larger than the peasant. She is wearing a purple top with a long orange pleated skirt. Behind them are leaves from bushes and the earth under them is brown. The colors of the two people and the flowers stand out completely from the background. The paint makes me think about how important the workers class are to the world, without hard work, we don't get anywhere, so, we should give them the real value that they deserve.

Despite being part of cubism period, Picasso was part of a movement that would become known as Modernism.
"Girl before a mirror" is housed in The Museum of Modern Art in NYC. MoMA has been important in developing and collecting modernist art, and is often identified as one of the largest and most influential museums of modern art in the world. The painting shows the image of a woman confronting her mortality in a mirror, which reflects her as a death's head, and shows the mirror reflecting her future or her "inside", on the mirror the image of the girl is kind darkened, her eyes are round and hollow, and her intensely feminine body is twisted and contorted.
So our group chose that painting because we think its idea is kind of gothic and it made us feel thoughtful about our lives and about the reflection of our souls
