Audience Age : 20-30 (Adults), 60-80 (People who couldn't get out of their chair and want to watch action) (but they may get a heart attack) Adults usually have more time and money to learn how to mountain climb and buy the gear needed. People aged 60-80 may have been mountain climbers and want to relive the thrill of climbing a mountain, but this will depend on their economic class.
Audience Economic Class : C1 or B1, since they are similar economic class to Joe Simpson, so they can relate to him and root for him. They may also have enough time and expendable income to make mountain climbing an affordable hobby, which means that they will be more interested in the documentary. People in economic class D would not be interested, since they don't have the money for mountain climbing gear, and they would want to spend their free time relaxing instead of being on an adventure. This depends on their psychographic profile. Audience Psychographic Profile : Explorers (People who seek adventure), since the documentary is an mountain climbing adventure documentary, so they will be interested since there is a sense of exploration in the documentary. Audience Gender : Male, since they usually like action and adventure. Audience Race : White people, since Joe Simpson and Simon Yates are both white, so it might be easier for them to relate.
Other : People who may have read the book and want to know more about it, or people who don't want to risk their own lives climbing a mountain and want to watch someone else do it. (I wrote too much I know)

By looking in to touching the void, i think people that belong to the social status C1 and B are the ones who would watch this kind of documentary because they first of all have the money and the conditions suitable to go to do some expensive hobby, or that they just have nothing to do but are really interested in these kind of cool stories and people's experiences. To make this statement more specific I think that males will watch and be interested more of this documentary because biologically speaking males are more strong and sometimes more sporty and adventureous than most girls.

The techniques used in the documentary clip makes the scene seem much more scary. They help build up tension and foreshadow the upcoming events. For example, they included strong winds and heavy footsteps as diegetic noise. The strong winds show that it’s indeed very cold and it’ll take a lot of skill for them to make it to the top. It also shows that they have a right to be scared. The heavy footsteps show that they are already very tired out from dehydration and starvation. They will be struggling to reach the summit. The non-diegetic noise used was narration and ambient music. The narration was done with a serious tone, suggesting that something bad was about to happen, and talking about it again was already too painful. The ambient music almost goes unnoticed, since it prepares the mood and already increases the fear in the audience without them realizing. As you can see, sound can have a big impact on the mood of a documentary. These techniques have a direct effect on the audiences emotions.
~Ariel

Audience that just watch it for entertainment should be around 60 because they are old and only watch boring stuff.

Age: 11 - 50Gender: Mostly Male and some femalePersonality: Risk TakerI think the people that watches the documentary are students that are trying to read this book, adults that likes climbing or people just like to watch documentaries and learn facts. For people that likes climbing but never climber so high before, they might watch other people climb and then decide whether they climb it or not. People doesn’t wants to risk their life to climb a mountain if they doesn’t even know how to climb. For other people in the rank C1 to B can afford the expensive climbing gear and travel fee, so I think most people watch this should be rank C1 to B.

The personality of people who would watch these out of interest would probably be similar to those of Joe Simpson. People who are are ambitious to climb further. These people are in around C1 to B, considering they are rich enough to afford a computer. They are probably watching this to do this themselves, they need afford the gear, and they must have the skill the climb these mountains. The audience can’t be D or E, because those people can’t afford to climb a mountain, and don’t have time to.The audience age should be about 20-30, the age that most mountain climbers are. The audience age could also be 60-80. Some poor old people who can’t move watch documentaries as their only entertainment.
-Michelle Sun

There were a lot of techniques used in the documentary. One of the main techniques used in this documentary is sound and music. The sound and music helped create a sense of reality in the documentary. For example, the wind was a big part in the film. It makes the audience think its cold, uncomfortable, challenging, windy environment. Music also created a sense of scariness in the documentary. This made it seem that climbing to the summit was dangerous. Sometimes, the music created a climax as something bad would happen in the film. Audience: C1 and B because young mountaineers might get inspired by this clip, slightly older people because they sit in a chair all day and they're bored, so they might want to watch something more fun. Gender: Both female and male because there are female and male mountaineers.

This documentary is partly 1st person and partly 3rd person, it is done by recreation.

In this section (13:51~16:02) of the documentary film, Touching the Void, based on Joe Simpson’s real-life account of his adventures while climbing the Peruvian Andes, director Kevin McDonald tries to create more tension and the sense of danger and intensity. During this section of the documentary, the sound of howling winds are used to illustrate the dangerous setting Simpson’s adventure is taking place in. This makes the viewer feel like the tension in the film is building up. It encourages the audience to keep watching the documentary. It makes the audience feel the kind of scared emotion Simpson and Yates were feeling at that time. It’s just like being placed in the shoes of the character in the documentary. The howling wind sound effect may have been diegetic, but there is a very high chance the sound effect has been exaggerated when making the movie. The director and the editing team did this because they want to make the scene more dramatic. It makes the plot more action packed and interesting. It makes the audience feel the cold of the mountain. In conclusion, the sound effects of the documentary can affect the viewers. These techniques can directly trigger the audience.

The Genre of the film “Touching The Void” would be a reconstructed documentary. It is a documentary with many filming techniques like using zoom ins and outs, music and sound effects, voice overs etc. They help build up tension, gives a sense of danger, and foreshadows the things that will happen in the next part of the video. For example, they inserted howling wind sounds and heavy footsteps as diegetic noise. The Audience Age for this film: 20-30 (Adults who have a dream or seek adventure), 60 - 80 (elderlies who are too old to get out of their chair and want to watch action but they may get a heart attack) . The blue effect in some of the scenes make the mountains seem extremely cold and dangerous. Audience: C1 and B because they only have part time jobs, and they have spare time to enjoy their life. At the same time, they are in a similar economic class as Joe Simpson, so they can relate to him. They may also have enough time and income to make mountain climbing an affordable hobby, which means that they will be more interested in the documentary. The audience can’t be D or E, because those people can’t afford to climb a mountain, and don’t have time to since they will be busy trying to earn money.
The audience can't be A either, because they are committed into very heavy work load jobs.

To conclude, director Kevin McDonald achieved his intention of foreshadowing and increasing the fear in his audience. He does that by adding a variety of edited noises in the background to suggest the difficulty of this climb. He also edited some frames so that it would look more blue or more dark, making it seem they did the climb during nighttime, which is much more dangerous. Linking that back to the concept of perspective, he, in a way, forces the audience to think a certain way about this documentary. The audience will think that the climb was dangerous and that it wasn't Simon's fault he had to cut the rope to save both their lives.

In conclusion, director Kevin Mcdonald achieved the intended effect of making the audience feel engaged more and more tense while watching the show by using suspenseful music, slow motion and ambient music to set the scene. He also uses voiceovers which help to show that truth can be understood through different perspectives. For example, some of us thought that it was wrong for Simon Yates to cut the rope, but from his perspective, it was the only way to save his own life, and if he didn't cut the rope, there would be 2 lives lost instead of just 1. This shows that while some people may think the right decision was not to cut the rope, others may have thought the opposite. Linking that to the idea of truth, the director makes you think that it isn't Simon's fault by using voiceovers of Simon and Joe talking about the situation.

to conclude, director Kevin McDonald achieves his attended affect by using blue lighting for the night time affect, slow motion to make it seem more dramatic, and a tense music. The inquiry of this unit is that truth can be understood from different perspectives. This is hinting that this documentary may not be an actual representation of the actual way things happened. There are many perspectives of viewing this documentary, some people think that cutting the rope was the right thing to do, some people think it was wrong. The author is using the voiceovers to show the audience that they were both clueless of what was happening so i think that it was neither of their faults.

To conclude, director Kevin Mcdonald did not achieve his intended effect of making this film realistic by using blue special effect over the screen to make it look like night time and trying to make the audience feel cold, it looks very unnatural and you can tell the night scenes are filmed during day because I don't believe night looks that blue on the mountains. They also try adding wind sound effects but that also made it look fake because wind doesn't sound like that clear when record on the mountain.

In conclusion, director Kevin Mcdonald achieved his intention of building tension, making everything more dramatic and keeping the audience excited like for example using slow-mo when Simon cut the rope, or having extremely sad music when Joe was alone dangling in the middle of nowhere. As the SOI states, "the truth can be understood through different perspectives", I think it's correctbecause there are always more than one perspective in a story, like Joe's side of the story where he might've thought the opposite of Simon's POV .

Touching The Void was originally a book written by Joe Simpson based on a real life story that happened to him. Later on he made a documentary that was reconstructed, meaning that he paid other actors to act out the same thing that he experienced on the mountain he climbed with his climbing partner. In the documentary, a variety of techniques were used, for example, using different angles to make some scenes look dangerous, scary, and incredibly steep. Using these techniques make the documentary look more realistic and more believable. Other techniques like using a voiceover and sound effects also helps the entertain the audience watching the documentary.

In conclusion. Director Kevin McDonald achieved to recreate the scene and made it very tense. It uses dramatic music and different kind of techniques like lighting and different camera angles.I think you should look at both perspectives before say Simon or Joe was wrong. Simon cut the rope to save himself instead die with Joe. Joe could have survived, but his fingers were frozen, so he messed up. I don't think it is any of them's fault, because it was dark and they probably can't see much.

He used a lot of cinematic techniques like dramatic music, filming from different angles, making some of the film seem like nigh time etc. Also, after watching this film, people should look at both Simon, and Joe's perspective. This is because they both can't be blamed. They both made mistakes.

To conclude, director Kevin McDonald achieves his intended effect of making the scene more dangerous and dramatic, by using the cinematic techniques of sound effects, color of the scene, and the narration. Linking to the concept of perspective, I think that there are many ways of viewing everything, just like this documentary. The documentary can look like this when it is on screen, but it might’ve looked completely different without all those techniques and effects added. Reflecting on the statement of inquiry, which states that:“Truth” can be understood through multiple perspectives; Director Mcdonald made this documentary seem different than the real situation that happened with Joe Simpson and Simon Yates. How we view this story right now, may not have been the real story that happened.
