When I was about five years old, my older cousin visited me from college. She went to Columbia University and I was in awe of her. I asked her how colleges choose who get admitted and she responded, "They look at what you do and how you act when you are younger." She did not know this at the time, but I took that advice very literally. Ever since I started kindergarten I have always strived to act mature and grown-up. It caused me to pass on or miss out on a lot of fun opportunities.

How does this relate to the theme?

This relates to the them because I had thought that it was better to act older to impress people I did not even know instead of enjoying my lack of responsibility and freedom when I was younger.

When I was about nine years old, I moved up a level in my swim team. I had opted to join the group meant for older kids and was excited to swim with them. When I got there I found it really hard to make friends. I had assumed that if I acted older, then the teenagers would accept having a nine year old kid in their group. When in actuality, no matter how old or mature I acted I was still a kid to them.

How does this relate to the theme?

This relates to the theme because I had thought that acting older would help me. Instead, I was lonely in that group for a while until some kids my age moved up. I missed out on some great friendships in the younger group.
