Padlet Entry #5: The most important aspect of teaching and learning is building authentic relationships with students. I want you to identify a student in your clinical experience, who is minoritized (student of color, student whose second language is English, LGBTQIA student, etc.). Find out what literacy practices (reading/consuming and/or writing texts) that adolescents are involved in. Create a visual mind map that illustrates the most pertinent information you discovered in your engagement with the student. This is the opportunity for you to learn something about your students.

What is this adolescent reading (text; physical or electronic)? What do the student enjoy about the texts?
What is the student watching on television?
What forms of social media does the student engage with on a daily basis?
What games (consoles, internet games, apps on phone) are the students playing?
What subcultures are the students involved in? For example, TikTok dancers, the Goth community, youth poetry slam participants, skateboarders, kids who participate in Mixed Martial Arts or play Magic: the Gathering, etc. What does the student enjoy about this community?

Teach the lesson and upload a copy of the video from the lesson. The lesson should be taught in the format that the school is following (hybrid or in-person). Remember to only videotape yourself. Avoid videotaping the students. Provide a link to the video. Ensure that you also provide a link to all of the lesson plans within the sequence.

Entry 1: Take a photograph of your own (do not use a google photograph) or upload a photograph of a personal artifact, that illustrates how you define literacy. Describe the photo. Where did you take it? What were you thinking when you took the photo? What is the artifact? What role does the artifact play in your life? How does the photograph/artifact define literacy for you? How do you define literacy? Respond using a video addressing the questions. The video should not exceed 5 minutes.

Think through how you think it should be defined. How does the photo/artifact define critical media literacy? Where did you take the photograph? What is the meaning of the artifact? Now that you have met with your clinical educator, and discussed the 10-15 min lesson that you will teach, now let's plan it out. Using the lesson plan template, plug in as many details as you can, based on what you discussed with your clinical educator. Don't stress about getting it all right--or making it perfect. In the voice of Allen Iverson, this is practice! But, I do want to see you thinking deeply about how the lesson should flow. If you have time, speak to your clinical educator about reviewing a copy of their lesson plan, and try to organize it into our template. Highlight the section you are teaching specifically, and make sure it is clear how you are putting your own swag on this, and/or adding in critical media literacies if possible. Ensure that there are links to access the materials in your lesson plan.

Complete the reflection question on your lesson plan template for the lesson you taught. Also address the following questions using one tool in the Padlet, beyond a voicethread and/or video. Think outside of the box. You can not write this in a document.

If you could reteach this lesson, what would you do differently? If there were no critical media literacy practices within the lesson, what would you add?

Padlet Entry #6: Now that you have learned a few things about your clinical educator and a student, I want you to think deeply about how these practices can be incorporated into teaching and learning. Schedule a meeting with your clinical educator, to discuss teaching a 10-15 min lesson that is aligned to what they are teaching. Brainstorm using a sketchnote, what the lesson will look like like in practice. Try to include as much information as possible, to prepare you for the lesson. For example, what day will the lesson be. What will be the topic/content? At what point in the lesson will you teach it? Can you add your own "swag" to it--aka include critical media literacies. How might your ideas ignite engagement in the classroom? How might you invite students to support your integration of their critical media practices?

Padlet Entry 4: You should have started your clinical experience. This is the perfect opportunity to build a relationship with your clinical educator. Hey Jenna. Thanks for sharing. Social media has become an integral part of many of our lives, and we all have to learn how to engage responsibly. Remember that Media Literacy is the ability to access, analyze, evaluate and communicate messages in a wide variety of forms. It is the process of critically analyzing and learning to create one’s own messages in print, audio, video and multimedia. It's not just about the analysis but also providing opportunities for our students to create their own multimedia messages.

Also, the only areas of feedback I would provide is to choose a stronger verb for your learning objective. The verb identify will suffice. Also, the connections to students is a stretch. I don't know anyone who finds joy in citations.

-Presented a lot of information at one time. For each example, provide an example, and let students practice writing the citation, before they go and find the sources.

Overall Feedback: Great job Jenna & Justin. Teaching citations is not an easy feat! The one area of feedback I will provide is to make sure you have students practice writing citations and not just identifying them. This should happen before independent work.
