Thinking back... by Elizabeth Bracken

Well done - you've reached the end of the session! A really important part of learning is reflecting back on your placement and thinking about your experience. What worked well (so you can do it again) and what didn't work so well (so you can do it differently)? So take a few minutes now to offer up your thoughts on your placement. What was the best thing? What did you learn? What surprised you the most? You might like to add a picture or quote as well :)

I love that students often feel inflexible about work placement and think it's not of value. But? By the end students, almost without exception, recognise how getting out of your comfort zone to learn something new is so important to your career. I love reading your final assessments and Form D's!
NO MATTER WHAT YOUR AGE always learn new skills and continue being a lifelong learner :)

Feedback on Workplace 110

Not only have I learned new skills in community consultation and stakeholder management, the increased workload has meant that I have had to become even more organised and productive. I have adopted the "Getting Things Done" time management system, (see David Allen) signed up for "Evernote" and cleaned up my home office! The basis of this system is that your brain is designed to create, not remember - so if you clear out all the stuff you have to remember you free up space for creating.
I am now working on clearing out a lot of old files in my office at work and have also been reviewing all of my project and admin systems to squeeze a few more hours into my day. In the past I have put this off thinking it was not a productive use of my time - but now I can see how this small input of a few hours per week will reap enormous benefits in terms of feeling less stressed, being more organised and feeling more in control of my day.
Hope everyone else is doing well in this subject!
Nadine

I was quite open to the idea of a placement, even though it took me awhile to finally do this subject. I have two young children in daycare, so I did my placement by doing one day per week for five weeks. Which was good as it spread it out and I wasn't just jumping straight back into a five day work week.

Unfortunately, this was also a negative. It was difficult to start and finish a particular task. If I started a task on the Monday, it was generally completed well before the following Monday when I returned for placement.

The most important thing I learnt... I don't want to be a financial planner. Possibly in a bank (regular hours and income), but not with a private firm.

Cheers to everyone and Liz,

Leigha

I was initially apprehensive about doing a work placement, believing that having spent years in my chosen career would not value add to my outlook or profession. How wrong I was!
The work placement highlighted to me the need for continual improvement and self assessment of competency. Doing so will ensure that I can continue to build on my skill sets in a dynamic professional environment.
Adaptiveness is key in any organisation, wether is related to people, business processes or changing environments. Remaining in touch with what current practices are and where the industry is moving, is imperative to stay in the game. Networking proved to be a valuable tool for me, and I experienced this through my placement. I gained a deeper understanding on the importance of human contact and communication, and the necessity of it to complete task goals.
I enjoyed my placement, and it opened my eyes towards further personal and professional development.
Thanks Liz.

Robert

This has been a really interesting subject and its probably one of the best I've done so far. It exceeded my expectations as I wasn't expecting to cover its content in such a dynamic way. I found Liz to have a lot of knowledge. She was clear and helpful at all times.I really enjoyed understanding the different learning styles, identifying my employability skills and my weaknesses. Reading theory about Business Communication, Self Management and Problem-solving was a good way to take a deep breath and understand what I am actually doing well and what I need to develop further. This is a very self-reflective subject. Finally, I found that the placement component was a great opportunity to mingle with my colleges in a different way to what I am used to and gave me the chance to learn more about the business and processes we do at work. It has been a very rich experience that has placed me in a very good spot with my collegues.

Thanks again for this amasing experience.
Santiago

I expected this subject to based around personal and professional development, providing alternative theory on ways to grow and develop. This subject provided useful insights into thinking about yourself from a different perspective, mostly through the self-assess tasks in the weekly topics. Interestingly, I didn’t expect to enjoy this subject as much as I did, nor did I expect it to be so useful within my current career.

"Look at the word responsibility—“response-ability”—the ability to choose your response. Highly proactive people recognize that responsibility. They do not blame circumstances, conditions, or conditioning for their behavior. Their behavior is a product of their own conscious choice, based on values, rather than a product of their conditions, based on feeling." ~ Stephen Covey

Thanks Liz.

BUS110 provided me with insight into what I valued in my future career. I have achieved so much only in the first workplace learning subject and I am looking forward to adding new skills following on into the next 2. I have looked at myself from a personal and professional view and I am able to identify more easily the areas where I need development. I have reflected on my value and skills and self-confidence as well as understood my learning style. I look forward to the next 2 subjects and expanding on what I have already learnt. I have appreciated your support and feedback and the time taken to understand me as an individual and what I need and want to achieve. Future students will only benefit more from past students and their valuable feedback. Cheers Dimitra

I was surprised at the content covered in the subject. I learnt about my personality type and it has started an internal conversation about which direction I intend to start my career journey(especially after the last component of the world changing). I used my work placement to identify my skill shortages and strengths, and since have started to adapt to building these - mainly time management and communication within a team.
I have enjoyed the amount of personal reflection required in this subject, as although I know the importance of reflection, mindfulness, and balance, they are components I have not devoted enough time to recently. Moving forward I will definitely be using these techniques in my career and personal life. Thank-you Liz.

I learnt a lot about who I am, how I work and learn, what I enjoy and what I dont, and what I want to do with my future career.
This course taught me to practice mindfulness and reflection, particularly through the lens of work and productivity. It also motivated me to continually check in with myself, to see how my employability skills have changed and improved over time.
The placement taught me how the workplace operates and provided key insights into the business.

overall i thoroughly enjoyed this course and am looking forward to the next workplace learning session!
