In the global cultural and fashion landscape, Utopia and Dystopia have emerged as mega trends. They reflect two contrasting visions of our present and future:

Dystopia is a world of collapse, chaos, inequality, and darkness. It mirrors our anxieties about overpopulation, pollution, conflict, and the breakdown of social systems. Dystopia often appears in imagery of decaying cities, tangled wires, overcrowded spaces, and a lack of harmony.

Utopia, on the other hand, represents hope, imagination, and the possibility of a better world. It is not always about perfection, but about the pursuit of beauty, harmony, joy, and resilience. In design, utopia translates into optimism, vibrancy, inclusivity, and creativity.

But this auto transforms that same object into an artwork. Painted with bold blue-and-white folk-inspired motifs, it brings beauty, individuality, and joy into an otherwise ordinary and hectic environment.

On the utopic side, this image can also be seen as a symbol of joy and togetherness. The children, even in a cramped auto, are laughing, waving, and sharing space with innocence and energy. It shows how, despite limitations, there’s a sense of bonding, friendship, and childhood excitement that makes the ride feel like an adventure. Their happiness turns an otherwise unsafe, ordinary scene into a picture of hope—how people, especially kids, find ways to create joy and lightness in everyday life.

I see Delhi’s cultural markets as utopia because they bring together the diversity of India in one place. From Gujarati Lane to Majnu ka Tila, from Bengali Market to Dilli Haat, each lane holds a piece of another culture. These markets are not exclusive — they’re for everyone. This openness, inclusivity, and celebration of diversity is utopia for me. And for Jodi, this aligns perfectly because Jodi also celebrates India’s culture through prints — my concept simply expands that into the lived diversity of Delhi’s markets

Delhi as Utopia” explores how people transform the chaos of India’s capital into joy, beauty, and resilience. From cultural markets that gather India’s diversity, to fairy lights in narrow lanes, to public art in Lodhi Colony, to the equality of the Delhi Metro, the city holds countless everyday utopias. My collection reinterprets these details — garlands, rangolis, prayer flags, fabrics, bougainvillea, and geometric metro lines — into prints for Jodi. While Jodi often celebrates India through florals and tribal motifs, I extend this narrative to the real, lived culture of Delhi’s streets and homes. This makes utopia not a distant dream, but a personal, everyday reality.

My concept began with seeing utopia in Indian streets — how people create small moments of beauty and hope in their daily lives through rangolis, tulsi plants, garlands, fairy lights, and kite-flying, even in the middle of chaos. For me, utopia is not perfection but these grassroots practices that make life livable and joyful.

From this broader idea, I narrowed my focus to Delhi, because it is often seen as dystopic — polluted, crowded, overwhelming — but for me it represents the opposite. Coming to Delhi gave me a sense of freedom, inclusivity, and cultural diversity. The city’s markets, metro, bougainvillea-lined streets, Lodhi murals, and everyday rituals make it a living example of utopia.

So my project, Delhi as Utopia, translates these lived details into abstract motifs and repeats that align with Jodi’s bold and contemporary aesthetic, but from a more relatable, street-level perspective.
