Nelson Mandela was born on July 18, 1918 in a small village in Africa named Mvezo. Nelsons birth name was Rolihlahla, which his parents gave him. He was born into a royal family of the Xhosa-speaking Thembu tribe. at the age of 7 he began his British education and his teacher gave him the name Nelson. when his father died he was sent to go live with the Jongintaba people. the jongintaba people groomed Nelson to become a leader , they sent him to the finest schools there were. during a break from college nelson Mandela ran away because of an arranged marriage , but when he came to america he didn't realize how segregated they were from white people . he began attending meetings for the African national congress. in the end of 1952 nelson Mandela was a big problem for the government and they concluded that he had to be silenced because of this he was severed with a banning order.

What Made Nelson Mandela a Renowned World Leader?

Nelson Mandela was a leader of strategy. He anticipated the struggles the would be caused by the system of apartheid in the country of South Africa. Mandela was one who always thought ahead. Even in his prison cell, where he sat punished for conspiring to overthrow the state, he considered the potential successes and pitfalls of his actions. He always read the game of life. Personally, I believe a strong leader must be physically and mentally smart between the ears. Always thinking what is coming next. A leader must sacrifice his life and beliefs for the cause, which in Mandela's case was ending apartheid. While in prison, Mandela denied the proposal to renounce his opposition to the South African government in exchange for freedom from jail. When speaking about the possible life out of prison, Mandela said "What freedom am I being offered while the organization of the people remains banned? What freedom am I being offered if I must ask permission to live in an urban area?" For me, this shows an incredible amount of courage and self-belief. It takes a lot of guts to go out and say that I'd rather be and jail than living outside prison. This is just one of the qualities that made him the great leader that he was.

Apartheid was a policy that governed relations between South Africa's white minority and non-white majority. It sanctioned racial segregation and political and economic discrimination against non-whites. The policy divided South Africa into four distinct racial groups: white, African, colored, and Asian. Interracial sex and marriage were strictly prohibited and each of the racial groups were required to live separately . To top it off, the citizens of South Africa were also required to register with their government according to their race.

Nelson Mandela was a leading activist against apartheid. In 1943, Mandela joined the African National Congress (ANC) and co-founded its youth division, the ANCYL. Both the ANC and ANCYL advocated for a mass campaign against apartheid. Soon Mandela was elected national president of the ANCYL and his political views began to shift. Previously, Mandela opposed cross-racial unity in the fight against apartheid , but soon he became influenced by the writings of socialist thinkers and the nonviolent strategies of Gandhi. Mandela's leadership took the organization's strategy into a new nonviolent direction. They organized strikes, boycotts, and other forms of civil disobedience. During these protests many protesters including Mandela, were arrested as the government tried to outlaw any opposition. Mandela and the other protesters were all acquitted after a lengthy trial season in 1961. In attempt to squash any opposition, the South African government lead to its bloodiest incident yet when police opened fire on 7000 protesters. As a leader of the ANC, Mandela believed having an armed wing was necessary so he traveled to Europe to raise money for an armed struggle. The armed wing carried out acts of sabotage against the government without killing any civilians. But in 1963, Mandela was found guilty of inciting worker strikes and sabotage to overthrow the government. Mandela was locked in prison for 20 years. Although he couldn't do much, other organizations continued to grow and fight. In 1985, President P.W Botha offered to release Mandela if he agreed to " Unconditionally reject violence as a political weapon." But Mandela refused the offer

Leadership After Prison

After Nelson Mandela was released from prison, it was time for his strategy to bring South Africa's economy back to the way it should be. This is where we saw Nelson Mandela show one of the more important qualities of leadership: the ability to learn from others. Initially, Mandela was a socialist. After learning about the downfalls of socialism from the fall of the Soviet Union and meeting with the leaders of the Communist Parties of China and Vietnam, he completely changed his viewpoint on politics and economics. His change in beliefs showed how a leader can alter his strategy and execution without compromising his inner core values. Once again, Nelson Mandela is showing the world the proper way to lead a country, or any other group, through struggles or other difficulties.

For me, Nelson Mandela is right up there in the category of great world leaders in history. He showed similar traits to great leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi and Mother Theresa. Traits such as courage, sacrifice, wisdom and nobility in his life. These demand much respect and have much to teach us how to lead in any scenario. Mandela showed great commitment to his future goals and never gave up on accomplishing those goals. He always moved along his path, even when he had to disagree with those close to him. He never gave anyone any disrespect, including those who wronged him or disliked him. Mandela was open to the opinions of others, as you will see in the next piece. His open-mindedness put him above the other world leaders and motivators because he learned from the positives and negatives in others and used the positives in his leadership and ignored the negatives.

Apartheid ended very abruptly and took the many citizens of South Africa by surprise. The release of Nelson Mandela in 1990 and lifting the band of the African National Congress led to a series of negotiations which resulted in the creation of a democratic constitution. Soon white settlers voluntarily gave up their monopoly in a remarkably peaceful manner and no civil wars were needed to be fought.
