I didn't take much notice of it because it didn't appear to be vacated. However this was in 2014, in my greener days in exploring the world of Lepidoptera.  I didn't take good notes and a day or so later after returning for a quick look I could see it had been vacated and that was that. Tolype caterpillars make a casing that appears to resemble this one.
