Some exercises that can help students voice their thoughts, opinions, concerns, and communication skills through SEL and self-advocacy is by creating a safe space in the classroom, having students draw their emotions, having students write in a feeling journal, and setting goals for students. We can teach students maturity and strength when asking for help by creating a secure environment and helping students see they are capable of being successful individuals.

Engaging in peer reviews or work sharing would be beneficial in teaching students how to support their opinions, listening to others, and offering feedback/critique. Sentence starters posters on the wall, or at students' desks would assist them in these kinds of conversations. Agree or disagree check-ins or activities can also promote these conversations and provide an opportunity for students to voice their thoughts/opinions. Having students engage in "voting" practices for fun activities, read-aloud activities, etc. would also support opinion sharing, reasoning, and respect for other's thoughts or opinions. ALL of these activities/conversations/dialogs should be modeled by the teacher at any given opportunity.

One way to build confidence when presenting an opinion could be through sentence frames or sentence starters. During activities when students get to voice their opinion, sentence frames could help many students organize their thoughts.

Teachers can create daily check ins and form that students can fill out to describe how they are feeling or if they want to share any news. Another cool idea is zone of regulation and helping students get back to the green zone which helps them learn.

Activities that allow students to reflect on their work or give their opinions can help voice their thoughts. Other activities such as a daily check in where students can communicate how they are feeling, which will ultimately let the teacher know what that student is dealing with. I also believe it is important to teach students to set goals for themselves both academic and emotionally.
