"Pretend" often confuses the adult, but it is the child's real and serious world, the stage upon which any identity is possible and secret thoughts can be safely revealed. (From The Boy Who Would Be a Helicopter).

Each child wants to know immediately if he is a worthy person in your eyes. You cannot pretend, because the child knows all the things about himself that worry him. If you act like you like him, but ignore the things he is anxious about, it doesn't count. The child is glad you are nice to him, but deep down he figures if you knew what he was like, you'd hate him. So your liking him without knowing him just makes him feel guilty. (From White Teacher).

Children are deeply curious about odd behaviors and seldom offended or worried by them. What a remarkable gift to bestow on another person, it occurs to me and is so difficult for adults to accomplish. (From The Kindness of Children).

Why this Quotes are Important:

These quotes by Vivian Paley are important because they show how children learn and grow through play. They also remind us to be kind and understanding towards children, respecting their feelings and individuality. Paley's words highlight the importance of empathy and understanding in how adults interact with children.

Vivian Paley is important because she changed how young children learn. She showed that storytelling and imagination are very important for kids. These activities help kids learn how to be social, kind, and good at thinking (Paley, 1990). Paley's way of teaching made classrooms more friendly and fair. Many teachers around the world now teach this way, focusing on what children need (Paley, 1992).
