         <description><![CDATA[<div>1.  Marbury v. Madison - Established judicial review<br>2.  McCulloch v. Maryland - Supreme Court ruling (1819) confirming the supremacy of national over state government<br>3.  Marshall Court (1801-1835) - The Supreme Court under Chief Justice John Marshall. Chosen by John Adams, a federalist, the Court was a Federalist stronghold during years of Republican administration. Under Marshall, the Court ruled on federal vs. state power and congressional control of interstate commerce. The Court became powerful.<br>4.  Gibbons v. Ogden (1824) - The Supreme Court upheld broad congressional power to regulate interstate commerce.<br>5.  Judicial Review - The power of the courts to declare laws unconstitutional</div>]]></description>
