Housing a Forest

After making their own oobleck, students will see how their creation is changed when a speaker is placed underneath. Each vibration causes the oobleck to jump or "dance." They will also experiment to determine how loud the sound and vibrations must be in order to cause the oobleck to move.

Instructables Workshop

For this activity, students would create their own phonograph using a pencil to spin and a phonograph needle attached to a shish kabob stick. The students can play with their own homemade phonographs to determine why it makes noise and how they can change the noise. Students could work together and see if it would work to have one person spin the pencil, while their partner puts the stick in their mouth and plugs their ears. Through this activity, students could not only make music, but they would also learn about sound and how their actions produce different sounds.

Teach Kids Engineering

Students would work together to build their own music box using legos, a xylophone, and s-shaped hooks. This activity requires engineering skills from students, with instructions provided. However, students will be required to understand different shapes and sizes in order to correctly build this music box. This could also be combined with a science standard to show how different vibrations create sound.

They will need to recognize the pattern of the pipes on the picture in order to build. Once it is built, they will note how the different sizes an lengths create different sounds. Each pipe has a different pitch.

They will note the different pitches that the jars made. This experiment will help teach students that sound is predictable. When a jar has less water, the pitch will be higher. It will never change.

The students will tie a knot around a spoons, wrap the ends around their fingers, and place their fingers in their ears. A partner will gently tap the spoon with a ruler. This creates a vibration that sends the sound to the ears. This is great for teaching how vibrations cause sounds!

They will be instructed on how to build it, but they will need to understand the different shapes and sizes of the materials given. This could also be combined with a technology standard.
