Because of that and its huge steel economy and direct connection to the Columbian exchange made it possibly the most powerful country in period 5 Europe. However even with this huge economic power their main fear was losing their colonies because this would largely hurt their economy, shrink their area of influence, and possibly cause uprisings like with America. Australia was a back-up colony established when Britain lost the revolutionary war. It was populated by Europeans in 1606 in Sydney and became prosperous due to several gold rushes. This prosperity allowed them to form their own parliament and even though they declared independence in 1901 they still remain greatly under the influence of Britain and the crown. India however didn't go as smoothly. The British Raj took control of the Indian subcontinent in 1858. India was already governed and had a population of Indians already living there so means of independence were almost immediately brought up. India appointed councilors to advise the British viceroys. The Indian independence act not only allowed India to become self governing but also allowed Pakistan to become self governing.
