Jeannette’s dad never had a steady job that’s why they always had to be on the run, couldn’t pay the rent to their house, had to move in with Erma, had to starve, didn’t have clothes, and at this point they were homeless. The odd jobs that Rex made money of didn’t last long because he would spend them on alcohol. On the other hand her mom couldn’t keep up with her job and quit shortly after.
“Then he got fired from his second job and from his third, and was kicked out of the electricians’ union and started doing odd jobs and day worl.” (Page 110)
This is not only impact Jeannette but it also impacted her siblings as well. Both of their mom and dad were capable of having a steady job but they choose not to.They had to eat from the trash, had no clothes, had to start working at a young age to survive, and we’re made fun of. This will cause trauma in their life knowing that their parents could have changed their life but didn’t.

Many people who are homeless struggle with finding food on a daily basis. Most of the time they don’t eat unit they find food in the trash or other people offer them some.Jeannette and her siblings had to struggle with hunger throughout their whole childhood the only way for them to survive was to work, take food from the trash, eat other kids leftovers, expired foods, and sometimes they would not have anything to eat.
Jeannette overcome this by working at a young age to provide food for her and her siblings. She never gave up as soon as she moved to New York she had started working and making money to the point where she and her siblings could have a full meal and not worry about where the other one would come from.
