Karena Au, Grade 10

This artwork was created with the popular convenience store 7-11 in mind, I wanted to capture a regular sight in Hong Kong with different ways of creating art. I used various things to create my artwork including a stamp and ink, a fineliner marker, coloured paper, watercolor, wrappers from a water bottle along with a gum packet with dollops of acrylic paint to be the "gum". Much of the artwork was made not by just drawing or painting and it really made a great learning experience on how I can do things differently.

I used highlighter pens and color pencils to create this artwork. I used bright colors such as yellow and orange so there is a comparison between mine and his. I used lines to show the movement and pattern. I chose some famous buildings and locate them on the bottom of my artwork, then I draw lines on it.

I chose this theme to draw because I thought that it's a really important issue and it's also because it's really fun to draw in detail with fineliner markers.

Hyekin Kwon, Grade 11

This artwork is inspired by the Chinese traditional dragon. The reason why I colored red is that most of Chinese dragons are depict in this colour and red symbolize a good feeling. I used printing, paper, and plastic paper to create this artwork. This artwork that I created demonstrates the Chinese dragon that will be displayed on top of a mountain.

Linzy Lin, Grade 10

This piece of artwork is motivated by Audrey Hepburn and Alphonse Mucha’s “Paris 1900” since I recently became “addicted” to these two elements, so I tried to combine these two together. I changed the object matter to Hepburn but remained parts of the composition of “Paris 1900”, and also my own painting style and technique. For the materials I’ve used, I chose color pencils and pens to paint out the small details, markers to deepen the colors and digital software to modify the final piece. This artwork is significant to me since it opened up my way to dig and improve my own art style.

Angaj Roy, Grade 11

This series of photograph captures different elements of traditional Chinese temples. The idea behind this is influenced by how the industrialization and urbanization of Hong Kong have diverted the minds of many people to forget the cultural structures that are lying amongst the city. This year, my goal for this class was to incorporate as much of my personal life as possible, or at least something that resembles some part of my life. Therefore, I decided to explore the culture of Hong Kong. With my artwork, I tried to share and bring awareness to these "hidden treasures" around Hong Kong and the beauty of the culture of the people living here.

She owns the 3 pairs of wings, representing humans owns 3 different types of feelings.
The idea I have been thinking is the form of feelings that could be a form of animal, such as birds. Humans want to have wings just like what the birds have. So the wings could help them feel free. But it could also be the evil wings, which means that humans sometimes have negative or mean attitudes to others. Or it could be the wings of the fairies, representing the kindness inside the humans. I drew all of them into my artwork.

Asteria Liu, Grade 10

I created this file to highlight "Black Death", which only reflects our current society. Wanting to emphasize this feeling of death made me persevere. I used a black pen to draw the whole picture in the form of lines, which is very helpful for the depression I want to express. I added flowers and bones to the photo, showing the last flower before death. The black drop-shaped thing bleeds and weeps. At the time I created this painting, I was going through COVID-19, which gave me a better understanding of human life. I did not use paint, so I used a black pen, but the effect surprised me. It's the effect I want to express. This picture is very important to me because it expresses what happened in an important period of humanity, whether it is now or before.

Esha Mahbubani, Grade 12

I created this artwork to represent my Indian heritage, something I've so often put aside. I recently watched a show, called Sacred Games on Netflix that let me re-learn and re-introduce myself to the Hindi language, as my parents don't speak to me in Hindi. To make my artwork, I created the Indian flag and incorporated mandalas which are a culturally significant part of the Indian culture, with it representing eternality and spirituality. I also put the words "Jai Hind" next to it to show the patriotism that many Indians have. I also wanted to distinguish nationalism from patriotism - I want to celebrate the works and the rich culture of India, not show that India is better than any country.

This artwork was inspired by the hobbyist artist Tamayka’s ‘Vending’ piece. They way they had filled up the area with interesting things, and the way they had the artwork lumoated. I wanted to keep the artwork in a certain comfort level , therefore I stuck to using a digital media but also stepped out trying to fill up the artwork with items one would see in the certain area. The art work was meant as an exercise for myself to be more and more comfortable with creating realistic clutter in my artwork.

Jodie Lo, Grade 12

This artwork was made under the "Steal Like an Artist" unit. I was greatly inspired by the South Korean illustrator Henn Kim's artworks and her use of only black and white and her style of bending reality with surrealism. Due to the limited supplies I had, I chose to complete this piece using a digital illustrating software. It definitely was challenging trying to "steal" but not directly copying from her, through this exercise I've learned to not only "steal" certain components from an artwork but to also repurpose it through several modifications and adding in my own personality to it.

Johnny Ahn, Grade 11

I created this artwork because I enjoy creating art to express and to experiments. This particular artwork was created with the subject of appropriating elements from other artworks and then remaking them into my own special art. I was mainly inspired by the works of Robert Delauny’s Rhythms in which I was attracted to the simplistic yet plentiful colors. However, in the creation of this artwork I was in quarantine due to the COVID-19 virus and so I switched my art plan to create my art using Google Drawings which resulted in a very crisp and clean image which is exactly what I was aiming for. This artwork means a lot to me because it is proof that even in the darkest of times something beauty can be created.

Felix Tsai-Bookhart, Grade 10

This artwork was created during the "Steal Like an Artist" unit and depicts the 45th president of the United States: Donald Trump. The artist I stole from was Pablo Picasso because I admire how he is able to depict people in such an abstract way in his paintings. I like how the different sections of the human form in his artworks are divided by lines and contrasting colors. Picasso has a very distinct style, and I felt like by incorporating his signature elements within my piece, I would be able to achieve his style. I started by sketching a basic outline and continued by dividing the different sections of Trump’s face and the background with solid black lines using contrasting colors in each section. I used watercolor paints for the solid colors and pastels for the lines. I am happy with how the final product turned out considering that I had a limited amount of colors and materials to use.

The title of my series is called “The Light and The Dark.” Throughout this project, I took pictures with a phone camera of buildings both exterior and interior. Then I edited the photos with a laptop to make it both cohesive and intriguing. The places I tooked pictures were mostly Hong Kong such as Central and Mid-Levels. I used composition techniques for my series such as leading lines. The thing that inspires me to do this is from famous photographers such as Ansel Adams, he photographs about landscape and nature. The thing I learned creating the series was using the photo editor. The final piece that I created work out the way that I imagined because the experience I gained to become a proficient in photography. This piece will influence me in to become a skilled photographer someday.

Shraya Ethiraj, Grade 10

This artwork was made under the Oodles for Doodles Project. Where we doodled something with a recurring theme. My theme was Alice in Wonderland. I included blue as the base color and gold as an additional for contrast. The reason I chose Alice in the Wonderland was because the theme seemed interesting to me and the story was based on daydreaming which is what one does when doodling.

Aahan Gohil, Grade 10

This photo was captured for our Photography unit. My theme for this unit was "Bright/Contrasting Lights". I feel like this photo captures the essence of contrast in red and blue lights from a police vehicle. When I saw this scene, I thought it was quite simple, yet fits my theme very well, and proceeded to take a picture of it. I added some grain effects, along with some lower exposure and higher contrast. I feel like this photo is one of my best ones from the unit.
