There are some kids who may want to create their own method of learning while others prefer to be given information directly. Allowing children to learn through play/active learning is a very important way to stimulate their brains and encourage them to ask questions and investigate.  I also think it helps them retain things better if they can connect it with what they did or touched when learning.  I found the comment "competence proceeds confidence" very interesting because when kids can have a feeling that they get it they definitely gain and show more confidence.

  You must learn about yourself and know who you are so you can be there for others. Realize everyone lives are as complex as your own. Taking time for self-reflection is important. You must be able to listen to your own self and thoughts before listening to others. "All you need is an open heart and an open mind."

  I enjoyed how this showed another "side" of learning. Learning can be a fun/interesting experience. Children can learn so much through play. They need to be hands-on and figure out how things operate. "The Learning Pit"- hearing the words they say can help you gauge where they are and how to help them. Competence proceeds Confidence=100%. Students must believe he/she can.
"And above all, it takes a willingness to try."

The ideas he had with participation > content retention were helpful because there are many studies that indicate kids can still learn so much from just following along/participating.  
Not all ways of learning need to be with children "remembering" certain things at certain times. We need to stay creative and  be able to draw things from their own personal experience. Don't focus on one way of learning, especially when there are many: Ecological Education (learning from nature), Youth Action Research, Problem Posing-Inquiry, Traditional Classroom...

Culturally Responsive Teaching

Trying to make school fun and educational for all kids to find out what works to make kids want to learn and seek more from their classes. Every kid learns differently and it is important to make sure you are paying attention that some kids might not be grasping what you are talking about and you need to figure out how to make them understand  and feel like you care that they aren't understanding and want to help them.

As in the other video's it is discussing how to be able to reach all kids in education. Whether is be children that learn from the standard way of the teacher standing in front of the class or the one on one style of teaching or as we may be noticing now the kids that learn better from technology.   • The main idea of the first video was to open our eyes to the ways that cultures are overlooked in education and that we need to listen more.  I felt it was very powerful and it made me feel a little sad.  I kept seeing the faces of the kids I work with on a daily basis.

    1. video talks about CRT not not so much as a celebration of a culture but about how a child’s brain is wired.  Let kids learn by doing, be curious, ask questions and teaching them that errors does not mean they are unable to do it, but that and error gives you more information to do it better.  This video left me with more questions.  At what age do we need to reach kids to spark their love for learning? Will homelife and circumstances before preschool hinder a childs ability to create a sparkAt the middle school level I feel  like we have missed our window of opportunity to get kids excited to learn, and at this point they feel defeated and just do not want to try anymore.  I agree with all she said, but lots of questions for me.

    1. Teaching in a way that is not the “traditional” class schedule where kids can use environment and other social situations to figure out how they learn the best.
    2. I liked the leadership group idea, I like the concept of teaching in a different way, just not sure if schools have the resources to accomplish this.

    Culturally responsive teaching: Realizing that every kid learns differently, but keeping the playing field fare for is so important. In my work as a para I ceretainly do work my hardest to support all the students with the same amount of help.
    Self Identity:
    Working in a classroom of SAIL students is different every day. I need to know every subject matter from science to english, frm math to history. I always try to be upfront with students if something they are asking of me is "out of my league but I always want to make sure they know that I will try my best to help them out>

    Kids learn from doing and experiencing.  They also can learn by conversing with each other and by the support of their enviornment, which builds their confidence.

    While a main structure for students is applied, it may not be productive for others. Focusing on ways that students can participate will help them become more successful in the classroom. It is important to connect with students by understanding their individuality. By building a positive relationship with them and recognizing when a change is necessary, they can then, better excel.

Classrooms need to be inclusive to all students regardless of race, ability level or culture. Students that feel included will participate and contribute to lessons as well as teach others through lessons they have learned in their life experiences outside of school. Building an inclusive classroom will have a postive impact on the success of students outside of the school too. 

    I really enjoyed the last video of Brian Lozenski talking about cultural context and self-identity. I think it is important as educators that we don't get stuck in the same old pattern of education. There are always going to be ways to improve our school systems and I believe Brian hit the nail on the head when he presented about creating ways to learn through problem solving and research based projects. I believe it is important to have students find problems in the community and world around them and attempt to solve them. That is where students will find real life learning and real life lessons, which will also teach them to be self-dependent and curious about things around them. Problem solving skills will be used for the rest of their lives and in my opinion is what education should be focused on instead of strictly content based lessons.
