my preference goes to sadao .he was opposed by every one including his wife intially ,but he stood by humanity though he knew and feared the consequences if he saved the american's life . on the other hand he confessed to the president about his actions that shows his loyalty to the country, similarly when the asassins arrival delayed he helped the american to escape despite of his hatred towards america that shows supremacy of humanity over the wrongly understood patriotism (in this case)

This can be seen when Hana worries about how the servants of their house were going to take the issue of having an American in their house while Sadao was willing to help him without concerning himself with consequences of his act as the soldier's life was in danger. Hence he values humanity more than patriotism.

But mistaking it results in showing brutality and inhuman practises towards other countries. Sadao and Hana were thoughtful and had understood the true meaning in the qualities of patriotism and humanity. They knew that helping the American Soldier would mean that they are going aganist their country , but by not tending to cure him, they would be going against their own-self.
