Mayan Hieroglyphs

In our textbook, we learned that the Mayan system of writing originated around 300 B.C. It told the stories of the society's most important figures, such as its rulers and its important conquests.

From my point of view, the Mayan writing system is the most important achievement of the pre-Columbian civilizations because it was unique. Neither the Aztecs nor the Incas developed a writing system, which makes this accomplishment stand out. It is also impressive because it shows that the Maya language had complex grammar and vocabulary.

Chasquis in the Incan Empire

Our textbook explained that the ancient Incan empire had millions of inhabitants spread out over a vast territory. In order to communicate, the Inca people developed a mail systems that used young runners to deliver messages over long distances.

In my opinion, the Incan "mail" system is the second most important achievement of the ancient civilization of the Americas because it was an essential part of uniting a huge empire. Working collaboratively, the Chasquis were able to travel over 150 miles in one day! Considering that mail didn't travel this fast until the days of the Pony Express, I view the Chasqui system as an amazing accomplishment.
