      <description>Science and Engineering, Grades 6-8. The Next Generation Science Standards are utilized in these classes. 

This is the first project of a unit on the Artemis Mission to the Moon. Throughout the next quarter, middle school students will learn about the challenges of living in space on a deep space mission, the moon&#39;s resources, and the impact of the Moon on the Earth. Content will include a focus on careers, technology, NASA history, and the future of space travel. Three YA novels that tie into this theme are posted on the padlet. I will be reading the students excerpts of Crater throughout the unit. Students will be reading First Woman independently.

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The Space Launch System is the most sophisticated, powerful rocket ever developed by NASA. The SLS has been in design and production for the past ten years. This giant rocket is designed to carry the Orion capsule for deep space travel. The SLS will be used in the three Artemis missions, resulting in the return of humans to the moon for the first time since 1972. The SLS provides my class with a current event topic inspiration for this engineering investigation. This activity is one component of a complete unit on the Moon.<br><br>I chose the Flipped Model for this activity to maximize student engagement in the engineering design process. I am the only science teacher in our middle school, so the 6th-8th grade students were in my class last year. My students are familiar with the Engineering Design Process, so I will use the Flipped Model to review the process before the engineering investigation.<br><br>We are a Google School, so all of my assignments are deployed through the Google Classroom portal. Students will complete the Engineering Design Report and submit it through the classroom page. The report will be scored with a rubric embedded in the page, and feedback will be returned likewise.<br><br>The students will draw on prior knowledge of space travel and the forces of flight from a unit completed last year. The final products of this investigation will vary by age level. My fifth graders will complete this activity but not with the flipped method. They will receive in-person direct instruction before the lab investigation to introduce the process.&nbsp;<br><br><br></div>]]></description>
