The smaller chads (diameter of .25 cm) rose more quickly, with an ET50 of 211 seconds. The larger chads (diameter of .5 cm) rose more slowly, with an ET50 of 260 seconds. The rate at which the chads rose was indicative of the rate at which they produced oxygen in proportion to the mass. While the leaf chads had the same rate of oxygen production (oxygen produced per chloroplast per second), they had different. Based on these results, the mass was not proportionate to the amount of oxygen produced as the size of the leaf chad increased. The larger leaf chad had more chloroplasts to produce more oxygen, but it was not proportionate to the larger amount of mass that the oxygen now had to 'float'. These results support our hypothesis; the smaller leaf chad rose faster, indicating that the ratio of oxygen produced to mass was smaller in the small chad than in the large one.

Conclusion

In this experiment it was determined that 50% of leaf chad with the diameter of 0.25 cm floated to the top of the sodium bicarbonate solution before 50% of the leaf chads with the a diameter of 0.5cm. This suggests that the rate of photosynthesis of the smaller leaf chad was able to be make it buoyant faster than the larger amount of chloroplasts in the larger leaf chad. The rate of photosynthesis of the large leaf chad wasn't able to compensate for the mass of the chad. Errors could have occurs if the leaf chads were not from the same aged leaf. A younger leaf would cause the rate of the photosynthesis to be lesser and therefore make the time it takes to rise to the top larger. Errors could have also resulted from the leaves being slightly different shapes. The bigger leaf chads were not perfect circles like the smaller leaf chads because of the method of punching them out. This could have resulted in the bigger chads to take a longer amount of time to rise to the top if the solution.

Gather materials.

Cut out 2 different sizes (.25 cm for one and .5 cm for the other) of leaf chads while maintaining the same shape. ( 4 chads of each)

Place chads in sodium bicarbonate solution in a syringe.

Push in plunger until only a small amount of air and water remain in syringe. Be careful not to crush chads.

Place your thumb over the top of the syringe and pull it down, creating a vacuum. Repeat this process until the majority of the chads have sunk.

Place the sunken chads in a beaker full of sodium bicarbonate solution with a constant light source.

Record the time it takes for the chads to float.

Analyze results and form conclusion.
