DEGRADING PUNISHMENT AND DEHUMANIZING TREATMENT

In 'Night', on pages 57-58, there is an example of degrading punishment being given. Elie Wiesel receives 25 lashes from a whip while laying on his stomach, in front of hundreds of people, for accidentally walking in on a Kapo (Idek) in a compromising position. The most dehumanizing part of this scenario was the language (in conjunction with the physical brutality) used against Elie. It reads: "'Stand up!' I must have made some movement to get up, but I felt myself fall back onto the crate. How I wanted to get up! 'Stand up!' He was yelling even more loudly. If only I could answer him, if only I could tell him that I could not move. But my mouth would not open. At Idek's command, two inmates lifted me and led me to him. 'Look me in the eye!' I looked at him without seeing him. I was thinking of my father. He would be suffering more than I. 'Listen to me, you son of a swine!' said Idek coldly. 'So much for your curiosity. You shall receive five times more if you dare tell anyone what you saw! Understood?'" (Page 58). This example, as well as several others scattered through the rest of the text, show examples of dehumanizing and degrading treatment. This scenario in itself could be considered its own form of torture through torturous, cruel, and dehumanizing punishment.

In the People's Republic of China, the Uyghur people (who are mostly muslims) are being forced into concentration camp like situations. They are forced to work, are sterilized, tortured, imprisoned, and the amount and pace of the killings of the people classifies this as a genocide. The reason behind this treatment and imprisonment is religion.

This treatment and imprisonment of Uyghurs in China directly violates article 5. Article 5 guarantees protection to everybody from torture, dehumanizing or degrading treatment, and degrading forms of punishment. In China, the Uyghur people are facing all of that. They're tortured in camps, dehumanized for their choice in religion, degraded through forced sterilization and labor, and are facing death.

Everything I've learned about human rights during this week's assignments has put a lot of global history into perspective from a moral standpoint. For a lot of history, before the common establishment of human rights, many events and circumstances were in violation of people's basic freedoms. Even now these rights continue to be violated, and with the amount of places around the world violating them it seems as though there can never be a world that respects and upholds people's basic human rights.
