Jordan - The man and the boy decide to go swimming at the waterfall and I don’t think this wasn’t foolish. This is explained when they are bathing in the waterfall where they can finally clean themselves after a while. This supports my claim about the act not being foolish because it was their only chance in a while to have a little fun and clean up.

The man’s concerns, other than avoiding other people include finding shelter, keeping him and the boy alive, saving food, etc. He has many things he has to worry about. For example, in the book he mentions that even the location in which they make a fire has to be carefully planned. This proves that he constantly has a lot on his mind trying to keep them safe and trying to get somewhere they can settle.

The reason why the man and the boy visit the man’s childhood home is because he wants the relive and remember his childhood. He want’s to try to think of the good memories of his youth. The boy gets scared because the house is empty. The emptiness of the house reminds him of the emptiness of the outside world.

The man asks the boy, “Can you do it? When the time comes? Can you?.” I think the man referring is referring to death because he knows it’s bound to happen sooner than later. He wants to realize that his boy will be able to handle that and do it when the time comes. It takes a lot for a son have to be without a father, especially for him to be so young.

With each meal they savor each bite so they won’t be so hungry later. For example, each stop they make, they try and scavenge for food. - Eunice Bragg

What does the man mean when he says, “You forget what you want to remember, and you remember what you want to forget?” (12) Suggest memories that he is trying to keep, and sights or experiences he probably wishes he could forget.

When the man states this quote, he means that your brain forgets what you feel is important and you want to remember and makes you remember events you would rather not. We see this with the man because he only remembers select events from his childhood, and from his time with his wife. These examples are of the good memories that he can not remember but something like shooting the man threatening his kid with the knife he will remember forever. This quote means that you remember things that are not the happiest or you forget the happy memories.

-Michael

The man basically means that our more painful memories, the ones we want to leave behind are harder to forget while the ones we do want to remember tend to fade as time passes. For the man, he probably wants to keep the memory of his wife alive while forgetting all the horrible experiences he’s gone through in this post-apocalyptic world. Traumatic events like witnessing his wife’s mental health decline, a truck full of bodies, and shooting a man dead. Memories like those are ones he surely wants to forget, but will likely never be able to because they are engraved into his mind.

I think McCarthy uses imagery of the ocean to describe the landscape because they are eerily similar. He writes “ the blackened shapes of rocks standing up out of the shoals of ash and billows of ash” with this he is saying that the landscape is basically empty. Similar to being in the oceans, there is a lot of nothingness around you.
