Anthony Joshua Guzman Dimas

The prestige of the Nobel Prize stems in part from the considerable research that goes into the selection of the prizewinners. Although the winners are announced in October and November, the selection process begins in the early autumn of the preceding year, when the prize-awarding institutions invite more than 6,000 individuals to propose, or nominate, candidates for the prizes. Prize proposals must be submitted to the Nobel Committees on or before January 31 of the award year.

Outside experts are frequently consulted during the process in order to help the committees determine the originality and significance of each nominee’s contribution. During September and early October the Nobel Committees have accomplished their work and submit their recommendations to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and the other prize-awarding institutions. Prizes may be given only to individuals, except the Peace Prize, which may also be conferred upon an institution. The Nobel Prize selection process.

Each Nobel Prize consists of a gold medal, a diploma bearing a citation, and a sum of money, the amount of which depends on the income of the Nobel Foundation. A Nobel Prize is either given entirely to one person, divided equally between two persons, or shared by three persons. In the latter case, each of the three persons can receive a one-third share of the prize or two together can receive a one-half share. If a prize is declined or not accepted before a set date, the prize money goes back into the funds.

Some prizes have been declined by their winners, and in certain instances governments have refused to allow their citizens to accept them. The ceremonial presentations of the awards for physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature, and economics take place in Stockholm, and that for peace takes place in Oslo on December 10, the anniversary of Nobel’s death. The laureates usually receive their prizes in person, and each presents a lecture in connection with the award ceremonies. The general principles governing awards were laid down by Alfred Nobel in his will.

In 1900 supplementary rules of interpretation and administration were agreed upon between the executors, representatives of the prize-awarding institutions, and the Nobel family and were confirmed by the king in council. Nobel’s ambiguous stipulation that the literature prize be awarded to the authors of works of an «idealistic tendency» was interpreted strictly in the beginning but has gradually been interpreted more flexibly. The Peace Prize has been the prize most frequently reserved or withheld.

Teher I tried not to put the same because is repetitive, so I preferred to complement instead of repeat. :)

https://www.britannica.com/topic/Nobel-Prize/The-prizes

Nadia Selene Hernández Ramírez

Origen of the Nobel Prize

The origin of the Nobel Prize goes back to 27 November 1895: Alfred Nobel signed his last will, donating most of his fortune to a series of prizes in Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature and Peace. That’s how the Nobel Prize was born. A testament that caused great controversy, not only for his family, who opposed the establishment of the Nobel Prize, but also for international public opinion. It was five years before the first Nobel Prize could be awarded in 1901. Today, it is considered the most prestigious award in the world.

Alfred Nobel’s desire was for his assets to serve a benefit to humanity. According to his will, his heritage would have to be divided into five sections: first, the most important discoveries or inventions in the field of physics. Another part, for the person who has made the most important chemical discovery or improvement. Another part should go to the person who made the most important discovery within the field of physiology or medicine. Another part for the person who, in the field of literature, produced the most outstanding work. And finally, a part for the person who has done the best to advance in communion among nations, the abolition of standing armies and the establishment and promotion of peace congresses.

But Alfred Nobel not only detailed the content of the awards, but also left in writing the institutions that would deliver them. Thus, prizes in physics and chemistry are awarded by the Swedish Academy of Sciences. Physiological or medical achievements are awarded by the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. As for literature, the Stockholm Academy would be responsible for awarding them; and for the champions of peace, the Norwegian Storting would do so.

The award ceremony takes place in Stockholm on 10 December, the date on which Alfred Nobel died. However, the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded in Oslo, Norway.

Women who have won the Nobel Prize for Literature

Selma Lagerlof, 1909
Grazia Deledda, 1926
Sigrid Undset, 1928
Pearl S.

Laura Reyes Cornejo

The Nobel Prize of Literature is an award that is given to writers who contribute with outstanding work in this specific field. This prize has been awarded since 1901 along with the ones in Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Peace, and Economic Sciences (this last one since 1968) as part of The Nobel Foundation, which is based on Alfred Nobel’s will. He declared that he wanted all his money, which he made by his study of explosives such as dynamite, to go to a fund in order to be distributed as annual prizes for those who made contributions to certain fields for the world.

The members of the Swedish Academy are the ones who are entitled to nominate candidates for the Prize on its different categories. The proposals must be handed out in writing to the Nobel Committee by January 31st along with the reasons why they think those candidates deserve the nomination. In April, the Committee reveals a preliminary list with names that were previously examined. Then, the list reduces to about five names in each category. In October, the elections take place. In order for a candidate to win a Prize, they must gain more than half of the votes. The award ceremony takes place in Stockholm, Sweden, and Oslo, Norway on December 10th. This day is known as Nobel Day. The winners receive a medal from the King, a diploma, and cash (about US$1.1 million).

In total, 27 Nobel Prizes in Literature have been awarded to English-speaking writers. It is conferred by the Swedish Academy in Stockholm.

Alfred Nobel stipulated in his last will and testament that his money be used to create a series of prizes for those who confer the "greatest benefit on mankind" in physics, chemistry, peace, physiology or medicine, and literature. Though Nobel wrote several wills during his lifetime, the last was written a little over a year before he died, and signed at the Swedish-Norwegian Club in Paris on 27 November 1895. Due to the level of scepticism surrounding the will, it was not until 26 April 1897 that the Storting (Norwegian Parliament) approved it.The executors of his will were Ragnar Sohlman and Rudolf Lilljequist, who formed the Nobel Foundation to take care of Nobel's fortune and organize the prizes.

Although the Nobel Prize in Literature has become the world's most prestigious literature prize, the Swedish Academy has attracted significant criticism for its handling of the award. Many authors who have won the prize have fallen into obscurity, while others rejected by the jury remain widely studied and read. The prize has "become widely seen as a political one peace prize in literary disguise", whose judges are prejudiced against authors with political tastes different from theirs. As of 2016, 16 of the 113 recipients have been of Scandinavian origin. The Academy has often been alleged to be biased towards European, and in particular Swedish, authors.

Resources:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nobel_Prize_in_Literature

https://www.britannica.com/topic/Winners-of-the-Nobel-Prize-for-Literature-1856938
