The Mississippi river has had a major social impact on America. In the past the river has been used for farming and transport by the native Americans. Back then it was the center of life and it still is today. Now over eighteen million people rely on the river for its watershed as fresh water to drink and roughly 50 countries rely on it as a transport route. The river passes through ten states of America, in which the river has made an impact on the availability of water, fertile soil and irrigation/farming. This river provides 23% of Americas fresh water and is very important to all living organisms. The Mississippi river benefits over fifteen million people on just the upper half of its basin and in the lower half it benefits an astonishing amount of thirty million.

This graph shows the amount of discharge/watershed that has happened in the past years

The Mississippi river has had a major impact on the economics of America. The river has enhanced a variety of different manufacturing companies by providing water for the cooling and washing and also providing the route of transport to other parts of America. By supporting the manufacturing companies, the Mississippi river has single handily given opportunities for jobs and has supported people’s livelihoods. The Mississippi river helps to create $211 billion every year.

The Mississippi River is home to a diversity of cultural beliefs. This is where the first Native Americans settled in 800CE. The native Americans were very reliant on the river and used it to trade and to travel. Since the Native Americans were so dependent on the river it shaped their way of life, traditions and their beliefs. The other tribes by the river used it as a trading route, a means for communication and as a center in their religious beliefs. The Native American tribes such as the Chickasaw tribes that lived by the Mississippi were found to date back to 800CE according to artifacts at the National Museum of American History.

This is an image of the native Americans celebratory dress that was worn at all ceremonies and religious traditions

The Mississippi river is facing many environmental issues, the most significant is pollution. Pollution flows into the river by chemical runoffs from residential yards, farms and also companies discharging their industry wastes. Some of the toxic chemicals that plague the river are Mercury, cobalt and iron. Over 12 tonnes of broken machine parts and harmful sludge are dumped into the Mississippi river every year and it is because of this that the dead zone at the Gulf of Mexico has arisen. The Mississippi River Collaborative is a partnership of environmental organisations that harnesses the resources of factories to help reduce the pollution entering the Mississippi river. Therefore, if we do not mend our ways the Mississippi river will become a dead zone.

These are images of what the Mississippi river looked before and after flooding and pollution
