The elephant can be a symbol of the British Empire but also the natives.
The theme: Peer pleasure, inner conflict.
We see treats of colonization and an example of the white mans power.

The speech was held on the eve of the Quit india movement. Gandhi called for passive ressistance of the Indian people who were under British rule during that time period. This should be done through self sacrifice and non violence as he states numerous times(Ahimsa) and how the Indian people must stay strong. Gandhi wants India to be part of the big boy league and because of mrs teadrinker's firm grasp of India, the massive nation is but a helping hand in the ongoing war.

The Tempest

Plot:

“The Tempest” is a play written by William Shakespeare in 1610-1611. The play is a drama between a man, Prospero, his daughter Miranda, and a beast named Caliban. Prospero and his daughter has arrived at Caliban’s island, and Caliban politely shows them around his island. As a form of payment, Prospero and Miranda starts teaching Caliban their language, even though he didn’t ask for it. A little further in the play, Caliban try to rape Miranda, and Prospero naturally gets mad on Caliban and locks him in a cave. Caliban do not think it’s fair that he is a prisoner on his own island, and he’s not satisfied with his punishment.

Theme:

The main theme in this play is in our opinion colonization. More specific a critique of colonization. Prospero and Miranda is an example of the white man’s burden. The white man’s burden is a poem written in 1899 by Rudyard Kipling, which briefly is about white men that feels superior to the rest of the world, and therefore feels a duty to give other countries advice and in some cases even colonize other countries just to inforce their values and believes. The poem’s message reflects Prospero and Miranda’s actions. They arrive at Caliban’s island, and soon enough they feel the need that Caliban should learn their language. Eventually Caliban gets locked in a cave and ends up as their slave.

A sub theme in this play is cultural differences. Caliban does not understand why his action is a crime, and that could stem from his cultural background, where perhaps it’s a normal thing to do. But in Prospero and Miranda’s world, it is not morally acceptable to rape another being. Another reason why he tried to rape Miranda, could be a protest against Prospero and Miranda’s suppressive behavior towards him.
