throughout his childhood, xanthe would experience frequent headaches. he looked on with envy as two of his younger siblings began to learn hydromancy. meanwhile, he was often ill and bedridden. whenever he would sleep, he would have nightmares about impending doom. he would see the bodies of his family strewn about before him, a rising crimson wave that would crash on the royal castle and sink it into the depths of the ocean, a world shrouded in darkness without the moon's light.

his family did what they could to keep him hidden from the outside world, knowing that if it were to be revealed their son was capable of using blood magik, that he would become subject to cruel experiments. for a brief time, they considered sending him to the ward of mad mages on the far side of the tidelands. with each passing day, his power only grew more hungry, eating away at his body until he was on the brink of death.

it hungers. it thirsts. it demands more and more.

one night in 1493, the full moon was high in the sky over the tidelands. xanthe was lying in bed. the past few days, he was experiencing more hunger pains. his mind was gradually slipping and he knew if he did not satisfy the hunger, he would soon die. on this particular full moon night, the hunger was the most intense it had ever been. xanthe was digging his blunt nails into his palms, chewed on his tongue until it bled. there were voices in his head that began as whispers, then grew into screams and shrieks. his body shivered uncontrollably. his heart raced. he knew he was going to die.

xanthe ran out of his family's home into the cool night, bathed in the glow of the moon. his concerned family members ran out after him, calling his name. their calls for him blurred with the screaming, the shrieking, the rattling of his bones, the pounding of his heart.

next he opened his eyes, xanthe was surrounded by the lifeless bodies of his family. drained, just like that man from a few years ago.

through a twist of fate, he caught the attention of professor lioren at the velunthar institute. at the risk of being captured, he's agreed to allow limited experimentation using his blood in hopes of finding a cure for his condition.

the blood magik is very mutable. in a way, it does behave like the hydromancy i've observed from my siblings. i can control blood as a material and i have gotten better at forming it into objects. i much prefer this over the blood puppeteering i once did on marinos. maybe if i had my hands on a constant source of blood, i could use it as a weapon?

most days, it's quiet... the curse. i can live my life just like anyone else and act as though i have no magick at all. but it's temporary. the calm before the storm. when i was younger, it would come on suddenly - the aches, the hallucinations, the nightmares. they would crash onto me like a tidal wave. and i would feel as though i was drowning.

nowadays, i think i'm better at sensing when it grows hungry. i've found that absorbing others energy though absorbing their blood is what sates it. as unsavory as this is, it's my only means of surviving.
