In Chinaman's Chance, he has a lot of freedom and has the privilege of not being affected. Throughout the story, he talks about how he would ignore his culture. Though he has put in classes to learn Chinese he didn’t like it. He felt like it was uncool to do something involving his culture probably due to the stereotypes in America or the pressure to only speak English and conform to western styles. But race can affect people's freedom or how they view freedom and it can divide us like how he tried to divide himself from his own culture. He tried to conform to western styles and with that gave away his own identity when he should’ve accepted both of them.

In “Black Hair” Soto never gave a direct response to freedom but only how it was affecting his illegal coworkers that were not legal citizens. This shows that the Foremen either cares and wants to let Soto be free or he wants to keep his employer to still work for him. Either way, this is a form of freedom Soto is given this opportunity to continue to live and work in America.
