Collation of Data

Our group collected these data through the fieldwork we did. Furthermore, we included some information that we have obtain from the research of Kampong Glam through the internet to fill in for those that we are lacking of. We did these individually and then typed out the data we each have onto padlet, where everyone can access to these information online. Afterwards, we edited all existing data we have on padlet and tried to merge them all together, forming conclusions.

During the fieldwork, we collected data of things such as the environmental condition of the sites and the rate of the visits of tourists. We also took many photos of the different sites and even had a sketch on the layout of the sites like the buildings. These acts were to make sure that we have all information readied and available when we need them for extra knowledge or to know the overall landscape of the respective venues.

As we were doing our project, we realized that we had some necessary additional data that we needed for the project. Therefore, we had to go online to google for information that can be found from the internet. Such example is the history of Kampong Glam. This piece of information cannot not be obtained through the fieldwork, thus we needed to use the internet to assist us in knowing the history of that place.

The greatest challenge we faced would probably be the race against time. We had to complete sketching, photo taking and many more data collation within the time limit of an hour. Additionally, one of us had to handle two different sites which really makes it an extremely difficult task to complete.

Another thing we had to experience was having to stand under the scorching sun for an hour, doing non-stop fieldwork and walk around the sites while strangers stares at us and judge our actions.

Furthermore, during the collations of data such as the counting the number of pedestrians, we lost count at times when tourists or locals came in a huge group at the same timing.

Having to draw out the landuse survey was also a difficulty, especially for Allya who went to the Golden Landmark Shopping Centre, where there was a large number of shops to be accounted for.

During the fieldwork, team members should have worked on collecting the data needed as quickly and efficiently as possible so that we would not have a lack of time. Furthermore, team members that finish earlier can go and help out the member who had to cover 2 sites.

During the collation of data, we should also have payed more attention and focus to the tourists and locals who were going around so that our counting would be more accurate. Additionally, we should also have thought of filming the location that we stayed put at while doing the pedestrian count so that even if we lost count we could check back on the video to confirm the numbers in order to ensure a more accurate and precise count.

When drawing the landuse survey, we should also have taken more photos, or even a video by filming the whole site so that we can check exactly what shops there are and even see the kind of items that each particular shop sells.

Hence, we can conclude that our hypothesis is correct as tourists, as well as locals, do go to Kampong Glam due to its heritage. They often visit places like the Sultan Mosque to learn about the religion practiced by the Malays, as well as eating the various sorts of food related to the Malay cuisine.

Singapore Zam Zam serves a Singaporean variant of Indian flatbread, or murtabak; part of the joy lies in watching the cook dexterously slap the dough over the counter to flatten it, then pile a filling of mutton (or chicken), raw egg and diced onion on before folding the lot into a neat square and tossing it onto a griddle. You'll eat the finished product with a side dish of curry gravy. You can stay on the ground floor to watch the murtabak being made, or go to the second floor to eat your order in air-conditioned comfort.

Victory Restaurant is Singapore Zam Zam's closest competitor, in more ways than one: both restaurants are over a hundred years old, with Victory's age only being shy of Zam Zam's by two years. You have a choice of chicken or mutton murtabak - and a selection of sizes

Café le Caire on Arab Street was conceived as an alcohol-free alternative to Singapore nightlife. The menu is unabashedly Middle Eastern by way of Egypt: the mezza platter, with an assortment of appetizer-style Egyptian finger foods, is a must-try, as is the foul with hummus. Have a shisha after your meal for the complete Middle Eastern experience.

Rumah Makan Minang and Sabar Menanti both Padang restaurants, share a common lineage: a single founding couple from Pariaman in Indonesia, whose descendants continued the great family tradition of serving masakan Padang to Singapore.

Coffee is easy to come by in Baghdad Street. But only one place on Baghdad Street gets kudos for serving the best teh tarik, or pulled tea: the tea-maker at this sarabat (Indian tea stall) pours the tea in a long spout, expertly mixing the tea and milk while creating a froth that can't be made any other way.
